A caller requested police and medics come to a home on Des Moines' northeast side Sunday afternoon, according to police.
"When officers arrived, Amanda Kuebler, she's 20-years old, seven-months pregnant, had been shot, and she was taken to Methodist Hospital," said Sgt. Todd Dykstra, a Des Moines police spokesman.
Kuebler survived, but her unborn baby did not.
Police said that the a handgun was used to shoot the mother in the stomach.
A police report stated that the shooting was self-inflicted. But now detectives are trying to find out if that's what really happened.
"They're trying to determine exactly who fired the shot, they have to look at everything to determine if it was her or if it was somebody else," Dykstra said.
Police said the woman is still hospitalized in serious condition. They are waiting for her condition to improve so they can talk to her.
Dykstra said without speaking to Kuebler, police are only getting some of their questions answered.
State Law
The death of a fetus in the state of Iowa is considered a class B felony. In other words, a person can be convicted for up to 25 years in prison if a fetus dies without the mother's consent by a person committing a forcible felony.
The law also states if a person terminates a fetus in the third trimester, even with the mother's consent, that person can be charged with a class C felony. The conviction can carry a prison term of up to 10 years and a fine up to $10,000.
DEATH PENALTY
Any one else wanto call for the DePe ?
Self-inflicted? How could anyone do that to her own baby? I hope it isn't so.
We don't have the Death Penalty in Iowa.
A new form of abortion...Please, God...protect all these children from these monsters...Im so heartsick of reading all these abuse and abortion stories..
Any woman who aborted her baby in this manner wasn't going to be much of a mom in any event. She sounds mentally ill.
It's sickening.
I don't know if you ever listen to talk radio, and if you do, whether you have listened to Glenn Beck or not, but,
He and his wife decided to adopt a baby last year because they couldn't conceive---it took them a looooooooong time to get a baby---
I'm sorry, but there are many, many people that want to adopt babies, so there is no reason to get rid of a baby, even if you do not want it----
If it dies with the mother's consent well that is a whole nother ball game.
I don't hear Beck often because he comes on during work hours for me. But I was aware that he came down to Houston to adopt a baby late last year. He co-teamed with one of the local talk radio hosts during my morning commute while completing the process.
I agree it's very sad. I also wonder, if this woman can be charged, why this legally would be any different than partial birth abortion.
That is gonna be what is so "interesting" about this case, I think---
I have a feeling that NARAL will hire her a lawyer so that the lawyer will defend her right to do this, because if it decided that she "murdered" her baby, then that would open up the partial birth abortion question---
You KNOW this is gonna end up in a court where some liberal woman activist judge will throw out any charges and the "poor woman" will get the "help" she needs instead of incarceration---
blech
Whoa, how can you "kill" a "fetus"? Wasn't it just that her "pregnancy was terminated"?
Kuebler survived, but her unborn baby did not.
"Unborn baby"?! You can't say that! Who said anything about an "unborn baby"? There's no such thing!
The death of a fetus in the state of Iowa is considered a class B felony. In other words, a person can be convicted for up to 25 years in prison if a fetus dies without the mother's consent by a person committing a forcible felony.
Look, a "fetus" does not "die" and it does not have a "mother"!
The law also states if a person terminates a fetus in the third trimester, even with the mother's consent, that person can be charged with a class C felony.
"Terminates," that's better. Now is a class C felony better or worse than a class B felony? And if a person terminates a fetus in the first two trimesters, is it not OK if it's not with the "mother's" consent, but OK if it is with the mother's consent? If so, what does the mother's consent have to do with whether it's right or wrong to kill an unborn baby?
Is that what makes the difference between an unborn baby that's OK to kill and an unborn baby that's not OK to kill--the mother's consent?
And is an abortionist in Iowa committing a felony if he kills an unborn baby in the seventh month but not committing a felony if he does the deed in the fifth month?
I guess some unborn babies are more equal than others.
but abortion is legal! everyone knows that prevents "back-alley abortions" ... right?
There must be more to this story than we know. The immorality of abortion aside, it's impossible to imagine that a sane woman would attempt abortion by pistol, not when there are so many agencies that offer less drastic alternatives and praise you for choosing them.
So, when are they going to start arresting abortionists?
Then heres a suggestion: stop reading them if you don't wish to feel that way.
Well heck!
It's just an abortion. What's the big deal?
