Man charged over Omagh bombing

A 34-year-old man has been charged with supplying the car used to plant the Real IRA bomb which killed 29 people in Omagh, County Tyrone in 1998.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said the man, from Dundalk in the Irish Republic, would appear before a magistrate in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh on Wednesday morning.

The man was detained by police in the border town of Newry, County Down - a few miles north of Dundalk - on Monday.

The PSNI said that the 34-year-old had been charged by detectives from the Omagh bomb investigation team with providing property of use to terrorists.

The charge states that between August 11 and 16, 1998 he supplied the maroon Vauxhall Cavalier car which exploded in Omagh. It caused devastation and the worst loss of life in any single terrorist attack in Northern Ireland during 30 years of violence.

No one has yet been charged with committing the murders in Omagh although one man has previously been charged with possessing the timer power unit used to detonate the massive car bomb in the Vauxhall Cavalier.

The latest charge charge came just days after senior officers stressed the investigation into the Real IRA atrocity was still ongoing.

About 500 lines of inquiry have still to be checked out by detectives from the PSNI and Gardai.

Relatives of some of the victims of the bombing have launched a civil action against the five men they suspect of plotting the outrage.

Michael McKevitt, Seamus Daly, Seamus McKenna, Liam Campbell and Colm Murphy are being sued for £14 million by the Omagh Victims Civil Action Group. Despite delays, the families still hope their landmark case will be heard at the Northern Ireland High Court later this year.

Before we do anything, let's check with Teddy the Brakeman Kennedy - he may have a different perspective (he usually does).

You don't need to go that far. There are some IRA supporters who post on FR.

I've run across them on some IRA refusal to decommission threads. I'll see if I can dig them out (and if I do, I'll provide source material so you can judge for yourself - you might have different standards than I) and freepmail you.

Unfortunately, that is true, they should actually come to this country sometime....
