"...because it means that you lack the mature ability to discern reality from fiction. If you cannot accept an actor in a non-political film role because of his or her personal political beliefs, you will have a severe problem trying to enjoy the best of what the cinema has to offer."

Acting depends on the ability of the audience to suspend disbelief. Many movies/TV shows are built on the premise that an actor is a "good guy" or the "hero". If we know that in real life Alec Baldwin is a left-wing jerk, or to use a hypothetical was a child molester, its difficult to put that aside and root for him.

Hollywood in the old days, knew this, that's why they guarded the image of their stars. It's also why Michel Jackson won't ever be big star again, people can't forget what they know and just enjoy the music.

But don't you see that it is YOUR problem, not Alec Baldwin's, if YOU cannot (or choose not to) discern between his private life and the character's he portrays on screen. Baldwin can certainly make such a distinction-- for example, there are few if any similarities between the pampered pacifist that Alec is in real life and the ruthlessly cunning (do-it-yourself) casino boss he played to an Oscar nomination in the Cooler.
