Perhaps you meant to say that schools shouldn't teach children "what to think" but how to think. One who knows HOW to think will discern truth for themselves rather than relying soley on another for truth. Yes, I once taught a lesson that was false, (in math) eventually the proof was coming up with ridiculous congruencies. The bell rang and one student asked if the conclusions were suspect. (Only one) When they learned the truth, they thought it very wrong for a teacher to "lie" to the students. These were kids who badly needed to learn to think for themselves, but they were only in Geometry in High School, so I guess there was still time. (The proof divided by zero at an early stage, once this is done, you can prove many things that are untrue)

"Again, no matter how much misdirection you use, it's not about me."...You brought up the issue of children in school confronting homosexuals"
Control of schools.....it's in the topic.
" that homosexuality is a perfectly acceptable
alternative lifestyle;" Perhaps you missed that last line?
The very topic itself having raised the homosexuality issue, I merely asked the question how kids, in school, would confront this issue ....assuming they had no knowlege of what it is or is about if someone doesn't teach them.
You, rather than asnswering the question central to the whole topic asked what age?
Since were talking about school age children isn't the age implicent in the question?

I didn't miss anything and certainly caught your misdiection.
Since were talking about school age children isn't the age implicent in the question?
So your question about kids confronting homosexuals includes all grades, K-12? If not, at what age should kids, in school, confront homosexuals?

Unfortunately, my daughter's issue have to do with muscle coordination.
The professionals that deal with her have masters degrees.
I have never been able to show her how to get her to say her sounds. They have wonderful tricks to get kids to say their sounds. After 6 years of therapy for her, I know a few things, but nothing like they know.
I tried to teach my daughter how to jump rope. It never happened. After a few sessions at occupational therapy, the therapist had my daughter jumping rope.
I tried to teach my daughter how to write, and I couldn't do it. Writing took lots of work, but after a few years she has wonderful handwriting. The occupational therapist tried special paper, slanted work surfaces, special devices to add to her pencil, and all sorts of other tools to help her write.
I thank God for all of those professionals because they have given her a voice, and they have taught her to read and write.

I agree. I spent over $125K educating my kids up to K12. My current employers are a couple of 20 somethings and their writing skills are 9th grade. Before sending any e-mails out, I have to proof them.
Unfreekn believable.

I thank God for all of those professionals because they have given her a voice, and they have taught her to read and write. That's really quite wonderful...I mean that, I'm not being sarcastic. There's nothing finer to a parent than to see his or her child prosper.

Nice try. Apparently you think it's perfectly acceptable for
you to ignore supporting evidence in book form, but when you point me to a book to answer a question you continually dodge and weave, it's good enough for you.
You are playing games.

"Yes, I once taught a lesson that was false,"
A tough lesson. LOL
Teaching is a tough skill to master. I admire those that do.
Like parenting, your example shows there is a fine line between wanting students/kids to accept the lesson, yet, at the same time we don't want to dash their spirit, their curiosity and their willingness to question and explore new ideas.
A smart kid who does question the teach from time to time will either been seen for his critical analysis and brains or a pain in the a$$ who's disruptive to the class.
The ability to mentor and nurture such a kid is too often lacking or the teacher is so besieged with the BS from being in the education system they don't have time. :-(

There was an article in the paper here just this past Sunday about "English" skills. The lack thereof is the number one complaint from the business world!

When people make assertions they can't or won't support the discussion if you want to call it that, does become amusing.

Same question, same non-answer.
Thanks for the reminder though. The analogy is apt.
Perhaps it is fear of the unknown that seems to confound some in this thread? Information can alleviate such angst.

By the way, I'm not against homeschooling. However, sometimes it just isn't the answer.
I'd really like to see great public schools, private schools, and homeschooling.
I don't like my tax dollars going to a poorly performing school district.

It's interesting when you look at the history of public education in this country.
When Germany emerged as a unified nation, the Prussian school system was enlarged. As Franz de Hovre wrote in 1917:
The prime fundamental of German education is that it is based on a national principle.... A fundamental feature of German education: education to the State, education for the State, education by the State. The Volksschule is a direct result of a national principle aimed at national unity. The State is the supreme end in view.
and:
As former teacher John Taylor Gatto writes:
A small number of very passionate American ideological leaders visited Prussia in the first half of the 19th century; fell in love with the order, obedience, and efficiency of its education system; and campaigned relentlessly thereafter to bring the Prussian vision to these shores. Prussia's ultimate goal was to unify Germany; the Americans' was to mold hordes of immigrant Catholics to a national consensus based on a northern European cultural model. To do that, children would have to be removed from their parents and from inappropriate cultural influences.

The Homosexual Movement in Massachusetts Schools
On March 25, 2000 the Massachusetts Departments of Education and Health teamed up with the national gay and lesbian group GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network) and conducted a conference for school children and educators. The conference was held under the guise of tolerance and safe schools. However, as the Parent's Rights Coalition discovered, this conference was about teaching children the unsafe mechanics of homosexuality. Following the conference, organizers denied claims of misconduct made by the Parent's Rights Coalition. Organizers were forced to concede the truth after the Parent's Rights Coalition made public an audio recording from the conference, which substantiated their claims. A free copy of the Parent's Rights Coalition audio tape can be obtained from the Massachusetts News web page. Alternatively, if your computer is audio capable, then you may listen to the following 10 audio clips, in order, to hear the entire contents of the free audio tape.
