Yediot Aharonot surveys the maneuvering ahead of Tuesdays summit at Sharm e-Sheikh and acknowledges that many are saying that, We have already seen this movie. The editors assert that, The substantive question, the answer to which will be given only at the Sharm summit, is whether, at the moment of truth, the two leaders will succeed in proving that this time this is a new movie. Hatzofeh commends President Moshe Katsavs equanimity and says that he has, on the whole, been a credit to his office. The editors hope that President Katsav will not back down from his stated refusal to sign pardons for terrorist murderers. Haaretz comments: "Supreme Court Justice Elyakim Rubinstein's decision to place Tali Fahima under arrest until the completion of proceedings against her is one of many examples of the overuse of the policy of such arrests... Tali Fahima is on trial for entering the city of Jenin in an illegal manner, for staying at the home of Palestinian fugitive Zacharia Zbeidi, and for allegedly translating for Zbeidi the contents of a secret Israel Defense Forces document he obtained while the IDF was conducting an operation to arrest him. One need not be a Supreme Court justice to comprehend that the danger posed by Fahima to the security of the state is minimal... The decision to hold Fahima until the completion of her trial is unreasonable and disproportional, and suggests that in the matter of stripping an individual's freedom before he is convicted, the constitutional revolution still exists only on paper." The Jerusalem Post writes: "Tel Aviv is destroying the first planned neighborhood in this country and its own first modern street, within what has come to be known as the Kirya. Moreover, part of the destruction continues despite court injunctions... These old buildings are the heart of Sarona, a German Templar farming colony established in 1871, just when Charles Netter was constructing his Mikveh Yisrael Agricultural School not too far away, thereby kick-starting the Zionist endeavor... The history the municipality is set on razing or removing isn't Tel Aviv's exclusive property. It happens to now reside within its city limits, but it's of national importance." Hatzofeh, in its second editorial, refers to reports of an anti-Semitic incident in Argentina and says that, Among the suspects, the names Yonatan Basi and Ariel Sharon do not appear. Yediot Aharonot, in its second editorial, decries government policy towards the Negev Beduin. Yediot Aharonot, in its third editorial, discusses a recent computer virus attack in the US. Hence my sarcasm in all the articles about the new flurry of diplomatic activity. I fear all the nice words will evaporate and the Palestinians will have new opportunities to blow up pizzarias, discos, hotels, busses, etc...
I hear Crosby, Stills, and Nash singing "We have all been here before. We have all been hear before." Deja Vu all over again.
Oh, and yes, I'd like to be wrong about that.
