CA: Perata sets up defense fund (PeRATaGate )

Senate leader Don Perata, whose business dealings are the subject of an FBI public corruptions probe, has set up a legal defense fund headed by Howard Janssen, a former assistant district attorney for Alameda County.

The fund committee sent letters to 200 friends and supporters this week asking for donations.

The Senate president pro tem is following the model established by former President Clinton by seeking support only from people who do not have any pressing legislative interest, spokesman Jason Kinney said.

The fund "allows elected officials to focus on doing the people's work without being distracted by the unfortunate and unwarranted attacks that are an occupational hazard of holding public office," Kinney said.

The FBI probe became public knowledge in November, when investigators began issuing subpoenas in the case. Federal agents searched the senator's home in December but have not contacted him since, Kinney said.

The fund-raising letters say Perata and his family are being subjected to "an unfair and unwarranted investigation that appears to be politically motivated."

Don is on the grill for, among other things, paying his son over $700,000 for consulting services. He has over the years been one of the leading lights in efforts to eliminate corruption in California government.

Senator Perata is one of the leading proponents of gun control in the CA legislature. He sees no conflict between this fact and the fact that he has one of the few concealed carry permits issued to civilians in the state.

At least his hypocrisy is consistent.

The people with money and power can legislate that the common man cannot have the means to protect ones self. Of course the police see it the same way because for a person to defend him/herself until the police arrive is construed as the armed citizen is taking away the job of the police. Fortunately, New York State has stated on occasion that the citizen is responsible for his/her own safety until the arrival of the police. I did a study in college about the average time for police to respond to 911 calls. It was just over 18 minutes. A long time to wait for the Calvary to come charging over the hill.

paying his son over $700,000 for consulting services.

That is a chunk of change. He needs to get a lawyer.

Well, now I feel all better.
