Besides, rather than try to portray Sponge as gay, I think he and Patrick remind me of two characters on an old comedy named Coach (I think)

Jerry Van Dyke would be Sponge and the big, dumb jock would be Patrick---I guess Coach could be Squidward or Mr. Krab, but the irony is the guy that does the voice of Patrick IS the guy that played the big, dumb jock on Coach!!!

I never saw that sitcom, didn't even know what you were talking about until I Googled Coach,sitcom. You're right, and that looks like it was a lot of fun.:)
