If somehow you could lobby that you were born a smoker...and couldn't change if you wanted to, you might catch a break. Otherwise...you are doomed to being bunched into a high-risk / high premium group.
Sure. Being gay is a lifestyle. I know they say they 'were born that way,' but I don't buy it.
There is a law that prevents people from being discriminated against. So how come people who smoke are left out there flapping in the wind? Smokers are badly discriminated against.
We not only can't sit in the back of the bus, we can't even RIDE on the bus.
If they die off at 42, does that help the 401k bottom line? What happens to stock options of dead employees with no families? They go bye bye.
I don't know. Male homosexuals usually die before they collect old-age social security, but many will go on disability. They invariably pick up all kinds of lifestyle-related problems such as various venereal diseases and colon cancer. They even have high rates of alcohol and drug abuse, as well as cigarette smoking(!). So the medical bills mount up over the years until if and when they hit the jackpot with AIDS, which is very expensive to treat. With modern-day medicine, they live a long time before they finally croak, though they are probably still doing what got them sick in the first place, thus spreading the disease around further.
Can the stock options of a person without a spouse or children be willed to a sibling or cousin? One the reasons for the push for "gay marriage" is to provide the same benefits for gay couples as married straight couples.
Supervising is full of downfalls...and I know it's not an easy job to do. In a job such as firefighting, being fit is a requirement. In the case of Weyco (and many occupations), I don't see what smoking or eating too many twinkies has to do with pushing paper properly.
" However, I'd love to see what the health nazis would say if this company tried to outlaw being a rump ranger."
hahaha. Don't be fooled, this has nothing to do with health. It sounds good (like "for the children" does), but IMPO, it's a crock. It's busybodies and control freaks getting to feel morally superior over people of their choosing.
"We not only can't sit in the back of the bus, we can't even RIDE on the bus."
Great point. I'll say again, I don't think it's about "health". If it were, sexual activity would be fair game (regardless of which way one swings). Imagine companies demanding celibacy or the practice of "safe sex" as a condition of employment. Or, as others have mentioned, limiting your hobbies to "safe" activities(you ride a motorcycle? You're fired!) How about employees signing a pledge to never exceed the recommended one or two cocktails per day?
I did a quick check on the BlueCross and BlueShield website. The old fart can probably save at least a thousand bucks per employee if he can guarentee they don't smoke.
Why? Do you think I will ignore the excellent points I've made or that they will somehow vanish if I do?
I'm for keeping the government out of telling businesses who they can hire and fire. Period.
Well bully for you. I on the other hand believe that limited "government" is necessary to protect rights given to all men by God. You want to take over and to Lord over an individuals free time then the government should be there to help said individual receive just compensation for said time. Now if you want to run a business and you wish to hire someone and demand a certain behavior for the hours said 'someone' is on the clock then by all means, you go for it, but don't think for a second that society is going to lie down simply because you despise government and let you run roughshod over an employees right to smoke cigarettes or any other legal vice they may CHOOSE to partake in.
My opinion is that some people may have homosexual tendencies....just like some people have addictive tendencies. Some people are inclined to take things to the extreme....others not.

Because it's politically correct...to demonize tobacco, those who grow it, profit off it, and those who smoke it.
We not only can't sit in the back of the bus, we can't even RIDE on the bus.
Yeah....and it will be something else next. And someday it will be just a perceived thought that gets you thrown in jail...let alone off the bus.
Don't we have alot to look forward too!?!?!? HA!!!
FRegards,
Frightening, isn't it? It is to me.........
I find this entire fiasco very frightening.
The author is right, you are next, whoever you are.
How do you feel about states regulating private businesses as to whether they allow smoking or not?
It's banned in my state.
Should it be or shouldn't it be.
I do? Please show me where I said that.
...don't think for a second that society is going to lie down simply because you despise government and let you run roughshod over an employees right to smoke ...
When did I start despising government and why on earth would I run roughshod over an employees right to smoke? I smoke. Finally, it's not society I think should "lie down," but government.
You brought out some very interesting points.
I do? Please show me where I said that.

Please forgive me. I thought I was conversing with a person who could follow a thread and a thought. I often times forget that many people today are severely lacking in their reading comprehension skills.
Have a great day and please... go have another cigarette, turn on the Super Bowl, and ROCK ON DUDE!
LOL
Only in the most myopic of short-term perspectives. Homosexuality produces a plethora of horrendously expensive medical expenses, driving up insurance costs for every insurer and thus for employers who help pay for insurance.
MM
You are correct, but insurance companies are cowered by the simple notion of exposing such truths.
I wonder what would the cost benefit analysis for insurance companies if they would be for promoting treatment vs ignoring the problems of the lifestyle.
Yup, the hold that political correctness has on this country is stunning.
