Red Puma is a completely automated service of the Swiss; the problem with things that are totally computerized is that they can be stupid; the advantage is that they're fast.

A program basically tries to automatically calculate a location and size on Red Puma; quakes go up there very very fast, but often the magnitude is off a little and the location is off a little; also, it will incorrectly show larger quakes as 3-4 different quakes on occasion.

The USGS NEIC site isn't as fast as Red Puma, but a human being reviews the results, so the magnitudes and locations are far more accurate.

Just asking but would it not serve life better to get a faster warning albeit a tad high in the scale ?

My 'weather" threat here is tornados.......If one tornado is bearing down on me feel free to tell me there are six headed my way but please tell me......regardless.

I can see where the potential is there for monetary loses possibly if chickenlittle hits the panic button too often but .....this doesn't seem to be the case here .

Again ...just asking as I don't know .

Thanks, Strategerist. Three major quakes within 15 minutes and a few miles of each other would have made large headlines all over the net, one would t hink.

There's really no such thing as a quake warning.

By the time it even shows up on Red Puma anyone who would be damaged by the quake has already had the quake.

And as has been noted this was far, far too deep to generate a tsunami. Deep subduction quake.

I'm in Zamboanga. Nothing was felt, and nobody else seems to know about this earthquake.
