I don't think belief in God and evolution are mutually exclusive.

Well, one is true, one is not according to the bible. Are you one of those people who don't give too much weight to the Word? I noticed from your homepage here you do seem more than a little enamored with Eastern philosophy

DEJ, I think you will appreciate this story. When I took my oral exams before the Commission on the Ministry, one of the examiners asked me, "What is original sin?" I answered, "Original sin is disobedience."

He was aghast! "No," he replied, "Original sin is a damaged relationship with God." Wondering if I was sealing my own tomb, I countered with, "No, the damaged relationship is what results from the disobedience." Hmmph. Still got ordained.

I don't believe that the Bible addresses evolution. But we've been through all that; it's how we arrived here. I do not think the question Genesis answers is "Exactly how did all of this get here; how long did it take and what did it look like?" I think the question it answers is, "Who or what was here first? And what is our relationship to that Who?" You and I are never going to agree on this.

One small bone to pick, DEJ. You get a little obstreperous with the snide asides..."one of those people" and "more than a little enamored..." Surely you can participate in a discussion without sticking little barbs in folks.

Sorry, they aren't meant to be snide at all. I'm really trying hard to understand an ordained deacon who believes in evolution in spite of what God relates in Genesis. The history of the two sides here on FR is apparently long and given to much name calling and acrimony against Christian believers. I try to stay out of the fray as much as possible but I will stand and explain my unwavering stance if anyone is truly interested, which most aren't. I really am very curious to understand your position, and your worldview apparently has a lot to do with it

I don't believe that the Bible addresses evolution.

See, God gives an account of Creation, and not once does He say that He set a sequence in motion. He and Adam, participated in it. In the bible, one constant theme is that man is to become a partner with God in Creation. Just another animal cannot be from the beginning, a partner with God

Ok, so I did a little reading up, on the Anglican church. To say that it's apostate would be an understatement. The Archbishop of Canterbury has had some controversy with Druidism. I attended a service in another country about 7 years ago, where the woman priest had her people circling some kind of new age prayer wheel while she tinkled bells. Never once did she break open the bible. It is not the church it used to be

I feel like we are two dogs, barking in the night at each other. I think you are taking the description of evolution and deciding that nowhere in there did God have a part. I can't personally say at what point God "created" us in His image. I can't even say for sure that we evolved out of anything. What I can say is that God could have done it about any way He wants. Whatever we discover about that process, our perceptions are merely descriptive, not prescriptive.

I don't believe in the literal translation of the Bible--not in the way you seem to. I don't wear my hair long and my head covered.

My worldview is somewhat Eastern--in that my day-to-day living philosophy is that I try to be accepting of what comes my way and not have to be in control of everything. I tend to judge every single event in my life as "good" or "bad." I am trying to see everything as part of a whole that I may not be able to see yet. Something may happen that I label "bad," but that later turns out to have consequences that appear to be "good." And so on. I am trying to let go of that constant judging process.

No, it's not the church it used to be. Of course, individual parishes differ. I broke with the church when I was dating (and eventually married) a black man--and a church that had extended me a job offer, rescinded it--and admitted that my inter-racial relationship was the reason.

I believe that there are five levels of Torah and most of us do well to understand one. I really don't mind women pastors, in spite of what Paul said, as I believe that he had women helpers who were quite capable. At the time, women did not teach in the synagogues, that's all.

Women also supported Jesus' ministry and I do believe that Mary was a good disciple. As my old fundamentalist Baptist Pastor used to say, paraphrasing Hillel in Acts, ... "If the ministry is bringing forth good fruit, who am I to speak against it?"

You have a God given right to marry whomever you please, but I would draw the line at the same gender. The fact that you have children is proof of being blessed by God, as He says that He knows us in the womb.

I don't think marriage, by definition, can be same-sex. But that's a topic for another thread.

Regarding the different levels of Torah, you are more knowledgeable than I. (I never did ask you about the cattle vs cattle--difference, please? I only know your Herefords from your Black Angus from your Jerseys...)

lol, well there are cattle and then there are cattle. Regardless, He owns them all. Some He made one day, some He made the next, after their kind

You are a thoughtful, ie thinking person. Time to re-read the Bible maybe. Every time you do, deeper truths will emerge
