We're going to be at war with these people inside of 40 years.

"the self-righteous, gun-totin', military-lovin', sister-marryin', abortion-hatin', gay-loathin', foreigner-despisin', non-passport-ownin' rednecks"

Other than sister-marrying, that sounds more like complement. Shoot, I don't even *have* a sister. :)

I also don't despise all foreigners, only the despicable (ptweewy) ones. Nor do I particularly loathe gays, only those that want Privileges designed for the most part, to protect the offspring of relationships, of which they have none, to be applied to their sexual dalliances.

Any article that quotes from The Nation isn't worth finishing.

""After two generations of guilt, young Germans demonstrating against the United States and against war now feel good about themselves because it is the United States, not Germany, that is seen by many as the aggressive warmonger."

As far as I'm concerned, this describes the condition that most of Europe suffers from (as well as liberalism in general). Whether it's Germany's guilt over two world wars...or France and Britain's guilt over their colonial heritage, they are essentially punishing us for the sins of "their" past.

Hell, when we look at many of the problems in the Mid-East, they are products of Europe and their desire to carve up that region at the end of each world war...in an effort to protect/defend their interests. This is classic liberal projection with a little "blame someone else for your problems" thrown in.

. . . big and bad like Alan Ladd when they are REALLY small and puny like Mickey Rooney. . . .

Just FYI, Alan Ladd was so short that his leading ladies had to stand on a box. I don't think he was that much taller than Mickey at 5'3". Maybe 5'5".

However it does prove that over 50% of the voters in Massachusetts are blooming idiots.

*************

You're quite right, but there is cause for hope. We do have a Republican governor. He may not be as conservative as some would like, but at least he's not Shannon O'Brien.

Mr. Longenecker is writing from the perspective of an American living abroad. What are your thoughts on his commentary?

Phew, that would probably entail a response as long as the author’s original – certainly if it encompassed a number of the rejoinders posted so far. I’m in a rush tonight and almost missed this thread anyway, so I’ll keep it relatively brief. Since this has religious as well as political overtones, I should firstly declare an interest.

I’m British, politically conservative and a traditional Catholic.

Leaving aside the plethora of ill-informed comments posted thus far and ignoring completely most of the downright silly epithets thrown around, I think Longenecker’s piece is fair, well-balanced and reasonably accurate. To be honest, I’m not sure, NYer, that I’m the right person to ask for a take on this. By dint of my personal experience, I'm likely to come across as somewhat of a fence-sitter since I have spent a great deal of my life travelling and working in the USA. Plus, having seen active military service ( much more recently than WWII !) alongside Americans, I’m likely to be seen as less than objective by some on this side of the pond. It’ll muddy the waters even further if I confess that, but for personal circumstances, I might by now have been an American citizen.

Drilling down through everything Longenecker says, I believe there is one key comment that epitomises the differences between both sides of the pond and it is this:-

Beneath it all, the growing divide between Europe and America is a divide between theism and atheism. This simple divide is cosmic in its importance and affects, simply, everything.

Earlier in his commentary he makes it clear that it is the impending demise of Christianity in Europe which will be its downfall and I wholly concur with that. The European Union ( and oxymorons don’t come more exemplary than that ) is an artificial construct founded on the monumental conceit of intellectual Marxism. It will, I am convinced, be consigned to the dustbin of history with the same epitaph as Gorbachev used to describe the end of the Soviet Union – an experiment which failed. There is, of course, a lot of water to go under the bridge before then and it is coming in the form of the tsunami of Islam ( I guess I’m into metaphor tonight ). I’m pretty well known for my robust anti-Islam views and make no apology for them, but the vacuum left by Christianity’s departure from Europe’s soul will not be filled for long by the prevailing secular humanism. It is already being filled by the adherents of Mohammed. So, although for reasons with which the author might not wholly concur, I think Longenecker gets it right when he posits that America is the last bastion of Christianity. It certainly is the final outpost of traditional Catholicism and one from which we must be prepared to deliver the counterstrike. There are many Americans, and this is evidenced by some of the posts here, who are tempted to say...”Well, let’s just pull up the drawbridge and let the suckers over there get on with it”. I can’t say that I would not have been tempted to take that view myself. But do remember this, FRiends. When Islam sends out its trailers, it does so with the clear message...”Coming soon, to a theater near you”.

On a lighter note, Longenecker proffers a quote from the Daily Mirror, which featured:-

a picture of Bush with the caption, "How can 59,054,087 people be so DUMB?"

For those who are not familiar with that newspaper, think NY Times edited by Che Guevara. As to DUMB, the number represents, almost exactly, the UK population –conscripted members of the Socialist Republic of Eurabia.!

And a final general comment which I never tire of repeating, to those to whom it is appropriate. Please try not to take the hot-air emanating from the British MSM with any greater degree of import than you would their counterparts in the USA. Likewise that populist rag, The Sun. Think of it as The National Enquirer but with all the integrity, eloquence and gravitas stripped out. ;-)

There are allies of the WOT in Europe but they tend to be on extreme right wing fringe which does tehir cuase no good (think Le Pen in France).

***************

Odd that you call Le Pen "extreme right wing", when he is considered extreme left wing here:

The New French Left

Jean-Marie Le Pen's surprise showing brought forth France's closet radicals. Watch out Europe.

On the one hand they admire the separation of church and state, but then they cannot understand how every president ends a speech with "God Bless America"

Because when a president says "God Bless America", it has nothing to do with Congress making a law (per the First Amendment).

I will note that from now on. (Ill even repost it again some day and claim authroship. Hey it works for the MSM, why not me?) ;-)

The Europeans still don't get it, do they?

The reason that so much of that continent has migrated to our shores, even after the postwar reconstruction that rehabilitated Western Europe's economy, is because of the unyielding statist approach to economic and fiscal policy pursued by most European governments.

A perfect illustration of this brain drain-which almost never operates in reverse-is the efflorescence of the Internet/computer technology industry within the United States.

You have to ask yourself why America outstrips almost all of its European competitors in this regard.

Is it because there is some intrinsic, intangible talent unique to Americans, which is absent from the genetic pattern of the French?

No, in fact, the exact opposite is the case.

Silicon Valley took root in our country because aspiring Internet entrepreneurs-many of them from France-took it upon themselves to go where the free market would allow their innovative concepts to go through gestation and birth, without the needless intervention of hidebound government bureaucrats.

This lack of vision/foresight isn't unique to Europe, but it is one of the places where this impediment afflicts the population most severely.

Just a slight correction, Switzerland uses 3 languages. German, French and Italian.

Another slight correction, Switzerland actually has a fourth official language called Romansch, or Rhaetio-Roman. As the name implies, it is a derivative of Latin, spoken in a few of the eastern cantons by only about 1% of the population.

If you had been reading my conversation with this, you would have read that I ALREADY admitted to this EONS ago. I even mentioned the box. You will also see that it was an expression OF THE TIME, referring to the "big, bad" ROLES Ladd played.

If you would use the brains that God gave you, you would look less of an fool, ass, idiot buttinsky, nagging scold.

Not all of us have the time to read 200 messages before posting a comment, some of us have jobs, kids, even a life outside the computer screen.

My apologies if this was already discussed, but do you think you could refrain from calling names? Seems a bit extreme for a passing comment that was neither rude nor insulting.

And if you don't wish "unsolicited" comments on your posts, perhaps FR is not the best place for you to be?
