In the movie,Dustin Hoffman plays the part of an American version of the German character Baron von Munchhausen,in that he weaves THE most outrageous stories (LIES),but you sort of really want to believe him;kind of.Picture an old, down and out 100 year old Bill Clinton, trying to pass himself off as an Indian.Of course, you have to be an extreme Clintonista to swallow the lies.
Do you not think the character Hoffman plays, Jack Crabbe, would have been honored by designation as either "liar of insane proportion" or "the most neglected hero in history"? Is this ambiguity not at the dramatic heart of the story?
It's about the either/or being a win/win, it's not about Jack Crabbe.
