Hmmmm.... I would say that it was intended to send the message that not all of America is against you and we are damned proud of what you did. And I think everyone made that very clear. I Doubt whether your opinion is widely held on the ground in Iraq, it is far too "nuanced."

Like I said, I know the gesture was well intentioned and I hold no ill-will toward those who like it. It just doesn't feel right to me. In Iraq, a purple finger could get you killed, which made it heck of a lot more than just a symbol to me. Yeah, I know I'm probably in the minority here but that's how I personally feel about it. I wouldn't feel comfortable painting my finger purple unless I'd risked my life in Iraq to vote. But I'm not at all angry at those who do.
