Despite progress in war on terror, extremist ideologies hard to fight

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia -- Saudi Arabia reportedly has spent billions of dollars to bust terror cells and buy sophisticated equipment to track down militants, but extremist ideologies promoting rejection of anything but the purest Islamic lifestyle are proving harder to combat.

A four-day conference opening Saturday will focus on ways to curb violence, as well as how to change ways of thinking in societies bound by religion and tradition. Experts from the United States, Britain and more than 50 other countries will share terror-busting techniques and lessons learned from cracking down on militants.

Homeland Security adviser Frances Fragos Townsend will lead the U.S. delegation to the Counter-Terrorism International Conference. Senior officials from the State and Treasury Departments will accompany her, the U.S. Embassy said in a statement.

The conference will be a showcase for Saudi efforts against its terrorists -- a matter of self-preservation for the ruling Al Saud family, whom the extremists seek to uproot.

Troops in camouflage fatigues and machine guns have already been posted at all entrances to the hotels where delegates will stay.

Many Saudis are rebelling against what they consider at best to be the misuse of religion and at worst terror-inspiring radical thought, expressing disbelief over ads offering "Islamic apartments" or anger toward clerics preaching hatred.

With this title, at first I thought the thread was about the Dem response to the SOTU speech.

If the Saudis would quit funding madrasses of hatred, murder and suicide-for-sex they might have better results.

Let's stop giving money to Wahabis.

Motion to adjourn the meeting. What's for lunch?

Really? How "many" Saudis, and how is this "rebellion" being manifested?

If there were this much opposition to that sort of thing in Saudi society, then it shouldn't be that hard for the authorities to combat it, now would it?

Today's specials are "Toasted Mecca-burger" served with irradiated sandflies, or "Mega-melt Medina" with mushroom clouds. Which would you like?
