LONDON, England (AP) -- Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev, who claimed responsibility for last year's brutal terrorist attack on a Russian school, was quoted as saying Thursday that the separatist rebels are planning more such operations.
In an interview with Channel 4 News to be broadcast Thursday night, part of which was quoted in Thursday's Times of London newspaper, Basayev expressed regret for the hundreds of deaths in the June hostage-taking attack on the school in the Russian town of Beslan.
But he blamed some of the deaths on flame-throwers used by Russian special forces who attacked the school to end the siege. He said that action, not explosives set by the hostage-takers, had caused the roof of the school gym to collapse.
"We are planning more Beslan-type operations in the future because we are forced to do so," the Times quoted Basayev as saying.
More than 1,000 hostages were taken in the school attack, which ended with the deaths of more than 330 people, many of them children. this report.

Eh? This guy claims responsibility for that atrocity, and they're interviewing him for television? Isn't that a bit like interviewing Jeffrey Dahmer and not tipping off the cops where you're going to do it? (Except Jeff's body count was much smaller).

I would say that if more attacks happen then this will become a reality. I do not wish this to happen. Their are many innocent people in Chechnya as their are in many muslim countries. Even if the Russians do this it will not stop the attrocities, they opened a can of worms that will just not stay shut at this point.

I didn't see any flame throwers - but at least one of the bombs they had tied to the basketball hoop - when they went off is when the roof came down
That's the first thing that I thought - why would they be using flamethrowers with hostages around and explosives set? Unless they were simply diversionary, or used to mask movement and not intended to actually engage - but even still you would think smoke would suffice.
Can anyone confirm - I thought that I heard some of the hostage takers were on PCP because they thought it would provide them enhanced strength, bolstered courage, and resistance to pain (not to mention altered perception and diminished judgement, but no one accused them of being scholars either.)
