In April 1975, Sydney Schanberg, another New York Times correspondent, declared while the Khmer Rouge prepared to lobotomize the nation that "for the ordinary people of Indochina...it is difficult to imagine how their lives could be anything but better with the Americans gone."

I didn't know Sydney Schanberg said that. If this is true, he was portrayed way too nicely in the movie "Killing Field."

You got that right. The Schanberg of the movie was the sanitized version for general audiences. The REAL Sydney Shanberg was and will remain to the end of his days, an apologist for tyranny, as long as it is a "tyranny of the heart", i.e. a LEFTIST tyranny.

Thanks. Mr. Schofield provides a nice parallel (but further recent parallels are manifold). I guess it gives a lot of us more fortunate human beings an even greater scintillating satisfaction to doze off in bed at night knowing we're filled with and committed to the blameless idealism which preaches trust and nonviolence; i guess we can find something else to do in the morning when we wake up, read the newspaper, and find there's another 500K North Korean dead due to our inaction. Wonderful world we live in these days, us great committed people.

TLR -- thanks for keeping all informed :)
