County Demos select Jones as new chairman BY d. LANCE LUNSFORD AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

Local Democrats picked a new leader Tuesday night to fill the void left behind by the January death of Lubbock County Democratic Party Chairman Irma Guerrero.

Johnnie Jones won the position over Charlie Dunn as both laid out their plans to invigorate the local party's effort.

" I'm proud to be a Democrat when we're on top of the world, and I'm on top of the world when we have bad day in the White House," Jones told Lubbock County Democrats.

Dunn, a local attorney, offered a three-point plan to direct a new focus on Lubbock with concentration on fund raising, fund disbursement and recruiting.

"If you want the status quo, don't vote for me," said Dunn. "I think we need a big change."

Jones, then the party's vice chairman, took over the steering of the Lubbock County Democratic Party when Guerrero died. Supporters applauded her effort to develop media for the failed campaigns of Freda McVay and John Miller - both of which were efforts to unseat incumbent Republican state representatives.

Jones' supporters spoke of her ability to handle a number of tasks in the past, from developing phone banks to quickly removing an ad comparing President Bush to Adolf Hitler from the local party's website.

Wow, what if Republican chairman had said this in 1997?

Whew...that's quite a legacy. Jones'll have a tough time beating that. For starters, it means he'll have to keep paying the phone/internet bills...

I took a Journalism class from Freda McVay in 1983 at Texas Tech. She was an old hag way back then! Not surprising that the Democrats in Lubbock have to scrape the bottom of the frog barrel; I was there last weekend and saw literally hundreds of "W" stickers on cars.

This is the only picture I could find on Google. I know it's small, but trust me, you are GLAD it is small...
