Sector Chief Michael Nicley said volunteers who try to patrol the area could hinder operations and draw away Border Patrol agents from priorities if they encounter problems.
The Minuteman Project, headed by Jim Gilchrist in California, plans to bring volunteers in April for a monthlong air and ground patrol of Cochise County.
The 83 miles of Cochise County's border with Mexico are among the busiest for apprehending illegal immigrants.
Nicley said he has concerns about the air operations being proposed by the Minuteman Project since part of the airspace in Cochise County is earmarked for the Border Patrol.
Also, Nicley said the project's volunteers are not trained in law enforcement.

I have called congress and suggested the same thing, have you?
So DHS management is the culprit? Are they deliberately sabotaging the border patrol? Is DHS getting their "marching orders" from the White House? All this time I thought the problem was due to an extreme manpower shortage!!!!
Is this a written rule or an unwritten rule on Free Republic?
Yes, yes and yes.
All this time I thought the problem was due to an extreme manpower shortage!!!!
It's not an extreme manpower shortage. Even if you double the number of Agents, like some in Congress want, the fact that they drive to the border and park their vehicles and watch illegals cross, without the authority to stop them, is the real problem.
Ask any BP Agent what "Sitting on the X" means.
To your knowledge, do any of these "neo-Nazi StormFront racists" post on Free Republic?
"the fact that they drive to the border and park their vehicles and watch illegals cross, without the authority to stop them, "
Sorry to keep bugging you MI, but I am mortified! Why don't they have the authority??
By the way, when you notice those immigration Johnny-One-Notes here on FreeRepublic, they are all anti-Bush.>>>>>>
More B.S. from the small group of OBL'ers on FR .....results of the FR 'members only' poll on immigration.
As you can see a *small* 4% think the borders should be open........ & a *smaller* 3.4% say immigration not an issue.
http://www.freerepublic.com/perl/poll?poll=10;results=1
Illegal immigration is the problem. 33.8%
Seal and militarize borders. 32.9%
Borders should be closed. 15.7%
Immigration should be reduced. 10.1%
Borders should be open. 4.0%
Immigration is not a big issue. 3.4%
99.9%
Yet posters *overwhelmingly* support GWB on any polls this site run on him.
Arbeit macht frei, my man.
Thank you. Only the mind of an IDIOT would say we are Bush haters, or did not vote for him. We HAD to have voted for him....he WON! Now, Bush is dead wrong on immigration, so if the froebl's or whatever they are called don't like it, the can lump it!
You're right. On most issues, Shrub's head is exactly where it should be. But on some, like this one, his head is deeply implanted in rectal defilade.
Your Welcome
Another fact this *small* group refuses to see..... AZ voters supported Bush in Nov., while at the same time passing prop 200. (w/ 40% of the hispanic vote)
Most Americans are just fed up with illegals, & their bills we're forced to pay.
A *fact* more pubbies should be thinking about.
A hallmark of a great leader is one who does what is right even when it is unpopular. Those who pine for a leader who will follow the lowest common passions of the mob would see the Clintons as their ideal.
Agreed! G'night you two.
LOL......you mean like enforcing ALL US laws......even the *unpopular* ones ??
47% for prop 200 ???.......pubs should really being paying attention to that number.
These are people who have been American citizens for three or four generations.
Same here in TX with the hispanic's & even the 'dems' I know........all tired of being invaded.
Thanks for answering the post, but I was hoping for a response from AZ Rangers Wifey that wasn't a 300-word essay about why the status quo is just fiiiine.
BorderHawk III - ping.
I see your point.
We have citizen groups here in our county in the PNW who are trained to observe and call crimes into authorities.
It has been such a blessing that more towns are training more volenteers from the community.
Robberies, chronic drunk drivers, druggies ect have been stopped at the time of the offenses.
If your community had a volenteer group it should work with the agents not on their own.
It is a wonderful and catching on program here. But it is done working with law enforcement with folks from our own community.
Your point is very valid.
