It's way too early to talk about massive troop withdrawals. Democratic institutions and the security of Iraq has to be firmly in place. In the mean time, the US troops will act as the stability force, and I suspect, beyond to ensure peace.

Well this certainly isn't going to make it easy for Kennedy to conyinue his demand that we "negotiate" our troop pull down with the new government.

I spent my second to last duty station at Ramstein AB, Germany. I left there in 1997--fifty plus years after WWII when we defeated that country. The base is still there--protecting Europe. Time to go? You decide.

The USA is in for the long haul in the Middle East. We will (and should) spend the next fifty years in Iraq. The mission will change from actively patrolling and confronting bad guys into garrison duty providing a stabilizing presence in the Middle East. As long as Mohammadens shout "Death to America" we need to be confronting them.

Now, at some point the oil wealth of Iraq should pay for basing our troops there, but first things first, let's put down the resistance and get the Iraqis back on their feet.

I agree. WE are also still in Japan - where my daughter and her P-3 pilot hubby may next be deployed (hope not - too far away :o( )

But I wonder if long term presence isn't wise, until at least two new generations have grown up in freedom - and will want to keep it

I hear you, BUT, there is NO question that, at least today, the Iraqi's want the armed Americans out. If the Iraqi's are truly able to keep the democracy going, their regional effect will be far greater if the US isn't there.
