"Don't know, but microsoft's track record of taking over industies is not without failures"
Microsoft just overtook Real Networks in media player use on the internet last year, plus Microsoft took out Palm in the PDA's quarter before last.
We haven't even talked about Netscape.
The loading search engine has changed lots of times, Yahoo, Alta Vista, Goto.com etc etc have all led at one time or the other.
Plus both msn and yahoo have already started to gain market share from Google, according to this very article.
Over the long term, I am going to back Microsoft on this one.
In fact I';; bet that even in a year's time, Microsoft will have a higher market share than they have today.

And I'll bet you that Google is still the number 1 search engine a year from now.
MS and MSN have tried their darndest online to become anything other than a periferal player, in both ISP and SEARCH and have never managed to be.
MS has not offered any new technologies or better performance than what others have offered at all in this area, and there is no expectation they will be any time soon.
MSMoney still can't take out Quicken... and I don't think MS Search is going to do any better. You don't have to like it, but a decade of track record online shows MS is not a serious threat to anyone.
