Not so fast! Without absolute control of the border, absolute registration and monitoring of permitted guest workers, and absolute enforcement against noncompliance (i.e.: aggressive arrest and deportation of illegal aliens), any program is a sham.

So far, our President is not on board with real border security; indeed, most of his energy on this issue seems to have been directed at silencing Tom Tancredo and other GOP border hawks. If the next successful terrorist cell turns out to have waltzed across our unguarded borders with a wink, there will be political hell to pay. Hillary is shrewdly positioning herself on this issue, and others are sure to follow. It would be a shame for President Bush to cede a slam dunk national security issue to the Democrats for 2008.
