I have built models for years. I no longer buy models from stores. First off, you can't find any military models at stores anymore. I guess they are not PC for some companies, Second, as you mentioned, the cost is outrageous.
I look for model shows in my area. At those shows there are always tons of vendors with plenty of kits to sell at more reasonable prices.
I hoped to get my young son involved with building models, but this article does not paint a bright picture for the industry to be around much longer. Sad!

My son just started building model airplanes. He built his first one last week, a Spitfire. I guess this whole operation is going down the drain.

Bet they are not made in US, or they are from very small companies. I guess this is the future of these kits. With our weak enforcement of IP treaties, plastic models will simply come from overseas ??

..First off, you can't find any military models at stores anymore...Really? What a surprise- most of the models from when I was a kid, especially planes, were military models. Nobody had a problem with that. I haven't really looked at models for a long time- my brothers had plenty of them when we were growing up and I'd imagined being able to buy the same kinds today for their grandsons. Guess not. Sad.
