And on another Middle Eastern note...Presbyterians!
Speaking of people who should stop messing with the Middle East, the Presbyterian Church (USA) is having a confab in Louisville next month designed to "explain" the denomination's approach to Israel divestment:
Requests by synod and presbytery officials for more information about the General Assembly's recent actions on Israel and Palestine have led to plans for a three-day meeting in February. About 200 participants--representing every synod and presbytery--are expected to attend.
"Steps Toward Peace in Israel and Palestine," scheduled to take place Feb. 10-12 in Louisville, is being held "so that they (synods and presbyteries) know what we did and why we did it," says Marthame Sanders, missionary-in-residence in the offices of the PC(USA) Worldwide Ministries Division and project team co-manager for the event.
If you have any idea that this will be simply an information session, think again. This is the same Marthame Sanders who according to Presbyterian Outlook met with presbytery moderators last year about the divestment issue:
Marthame Sanders told the moderators that in his view, "balanced is absolutely not the right approach"--meaning equal balance in how the PC(USA) approaches Israel and the Palestinians. "Principled is the right approach," he said, because in the Middle East "there is no balance. Israel is the stronger party by far."
The Presbyterian New Service story goes on to say:
As a result of what the Assembly did the church has "received a great deal of attention," Sanders says. "Presbyteries and synods...have been getting asked a lot of questions about this."
"It's a conference designed to equip leadership in presbyteries and synods," General Assembly Stated Clerk Clifton Kirkpatrick told the Presbyterian News Service. He said it is important for church leaders to be able to interpret these General Assembly actions.
Among the topics to be covered at the meeting are Presbyterian actions and witness in the region, interfaith relationships, and Presbyterian theology, particularly related to Christian Zionism.
"Christian Zionism" doesn't refer simply to Christians who believe Jews should have a homeland of their own. Rather, it's code for dispensational fundamentalists' support of Israel, the current bogeyman among mainline supporters of the Palestinians trying to explain away the inexplicable support of Israel by so many American Christians. That's a signal of the kind of tone this meeting is likely to have. As for the reference to "equipping leadership," that also code, in this case for, "making sure they know the party line."
There's another angle to this story, which is that Austin Presbyterian Seminary in Texas is going to be holding a little conference of their own that same weekend. Entitled "...to loosen the chains of injustice...American Churches and the Palestinians" (the program for which can be found here), it sounds like it's going to be a peach of a time, featuring workshops with titles such as "Christian Zionism" "Drawing Connections: Palestine-Iraq-Afghanistan-Washington," and "The Root Causes of the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict and the Condition of Occupied Palestine Today." Apparently it's going to be "Bash Israel Weekend" in the PCUSA. Athanasius on 01.28.05 @ 08:20 PM EST [link] [2 Comments]
This is why a Christian is not good enough on the resume for the leader of the nation (remember Carter?). Christians can just as stupid ass*&(*( as the next person.
If these morons haven't noticed Israel is a few million people in a sea of near a billion Moslems.
I forgot an additional comment. The leadership of the Presbyterian Church USA will be spending about $1000 for airfare, hotels, and food for each of the 200 regional leaders in the PCUSA to listen to an Israel antagonist for three days. The total bill that will be paid by the pewsitters will be around $200,000.
And the Presbyterian Church puts a gun to their collective heads, pulls back on the hammer and.........
Are you PCA?
Glarb.
"My" presbyterian church in NYC, which has lots of "mixed marriage" members, has gotten an earful from Jewish spouses (like me) and a very obvious drop in donations. The churches here had to make a quick choice between between being "even handed" and backing Israel. The ones I see chose the former at first, and are now trying to climb down. My feeling is that first inclinations are damning indications of beliefs.

Keep the pressure up and let the clergy know how you feel. A church that does not represent its constituents does not exist.
Some are still blinded, or willfully blind. I hope you are not. Further clarification for all who have eyes to see:

The modern-day version of this:
http://www.blueletterbible.org/tsk_b/Jud/1/4.html :
'...As I told you; one of the four specific assignments Rothschild gave Jacob Schiff was to create a movement to destroy religion in the United States, with Christianity to be the chief target. For a very obvious reason; the "Anti-defamation League" wouldn't dare to attempt to do it because such an attempt could create the most terrible blood-bath in the history of the world; not only for the "ADL" and the conspirators, but for the millions of innocent Jews. Schiff turned that job over to Rockefeller for another specific reason. The destruction of Christianity could be accomplished only by those who are entrusted to preserve it. By the pastors; the men of the cloth.
"As a starter; John D. Rockefeller picked up a young, so-called, Christian minister by the name of Dr. Harry F. Ward. Reverend Ward if you please. At that time he was teaching religion at the "Union Theological Seminary." Rockefeller found a very willing "Judas" in this Reverend and thereupon in 1907; he financed him to set up the "Methodist Foundation of Social Service" and Ward's job was to teach bright young men to become, so-called, ministers of Christ and to place them as pastors of churches. While teaching them to become ministers; the Reverend Ward also taught them how to subtly and craftily preach to their congregations that the entire story of Christ was a myth; to cast doubts on the divinity of Christ; to cast doubts about the virgin Mary; in short: to cast doubts on Christianity as a whole. It was not to be a direct-attack, but much of it to be done by crafty-insinuation that was to be applied, in particular, to the youth in the Sunday schools. Remember Lenin's statement: "give me just one generation of youth and I'll transform the whole world."..... [read the rest but scrap any racist remarks]
"Incidentally; this same Reverend Harry F. Ward was also one of the founders of the "American Civil Liberties Union;" a notorious pro-Communist organization. He was the actual head of it from 1920 to 1940. He also was a co-founder of the "American League against War and Fascism" which, under Browder, became the "Communist Party of the United States." In short; Ward's entire background reeked of communism and he was identified as a member of the Communist party. He died a vicious traitor to both his church and country and this was the man old John D. Rockefeller picked and financed to destroy America's Christian religion in accordance with the orders given to Schiff by the Rothschilds.....'
