President Bush Endorses Pro-Life Bills on Teen Abortions, Fetal Pain
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A White House spokesman has indicated that President Bush will back two pro-life pieces of legislation that will be at the forefront of efforts by pro-life groups and lawmakers to further reduce the number of abortions.
The first bill, the Child Custody Protection Act, has received House approval before but never had a vote in the Senate.
Under the measure, states would be required to honor the parental involvement statues of other states by preventing anyone other than a teenager's parents or legal guardian from taking her to another state for an abortion.
Abortion facilities located in states with no parental involvement laws have been criticized for finding staff members to take girls from another state across the border for secret abortions.
The Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act requires abortion practitioners to tell women considering an abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy that the abortion procedure will cause significant pain for the unborn child.
Once told, the mother will have an option to allow the baby to receive anesthesia should she go ahead with the abortion.
"President Bush supports both pieces of legislation," said White House deputy press secretary Trent Duffy late Monday.
White House press secretary Scott McClellan told the Washington Times that President Bush is committed to continuing to reduce the number of abortions.
"I think that he's made it very clear that whether we agree or disagree on the issue of abortion, that we can all work together to take practical steps to reduce the number of abortions," McClellan said yesterday.
One leading abortion advocate says her group will be ready to oppose the legislation, but her organization won't just be reactive during the upcoming Congressional session.
"We're not just sitting back and waiting for bad bills to hit us," said Feldt, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. "We are aggressively pursuing important pro-choice pro-family legislation as well ... I anticipate there will be many anti-choice measures, but our focus is on prevention."
During his first term, President Bush signed three pro-life bills into law the first since the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized unlimited abortions.
Those bills included the ban on partial-birth abortions, the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, and a bill to make sure babies who survive botched abortions receive appropriate medical care.
Thank God for a ProLIFE President!
With the recent cases like Scott Peterson's and now this, it's sounding more and more as if fetuses will soon be considered full fledged persons rather than something to be torn apart and thrown in dumpsters without a second thought.

Why the drop after 1960? (in deaths of women from illegal abortions)
The reasons were new and better antibiotics, better surgery and the establishment of intensive care units in hospitals. This was in the face of a rising population. Between 1967 and 1970 sixteen states legalized abortion. In most it was limited, only for rape, incest and severe fetal handicap (life of mother was legal in all states). There were two big exceptions California in 1967, and New York in 1970 allowed abortion on demand. Now look at the chart carefully.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Abortion Statistics - Decision to Have an Abortion (U.S.)
· 25.5% of women deciding to have an abortion want to postpone childbearing
· 21.3% of women cannot afford a baby
· 14.1% of women have a relationship issue or their partner does not want a child
· 12.2% of women are too young (their parents or others object to the pregnancy)
· 10.8% of women feel a child will disrupt their education or career
· 7.9% of women want no (more) children
· 3.3% of women have an abortion due to a risk to fetal health
2.8% of women have an abortion due to a risk to maternal health
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So how many womens lives have been saved by abortion?
Only about 3% of abortions since 1972 were reported to be due to a risk to maternal health. A reasonable person would recognize that not all of those cases represent a lethal risk. But lets say they did. That means that nearly 45 million fetuses were butchered to save the lives of about 1.3 million women. Or put another way; 35 babies are killed to save each woman.
Abortion was legal in all 50 states prior to Roe v. Wade in cases of danger to the life of the woman.
Ping to self for later pingout.
George Bush is not doing enough to stop abortion. Just like his republican predessesors, he takes pro-life votes, then does nothing. I voted for him, but I wish we had a real pro-life president!
Moral Absolutes Ping.
Catching up on some articles - well, baby steps are better than being rooted to one spot or going backwards.
But that Fetal Pain thing - how merciful for a prospective infanticide performer to allow anathesia! I would hope that when pregnant women are told about the pain that unborn babies experience, they will choose to allow the baby to live, and give it up for adoption if she can't/won't care for it.
Sigh - how sad.
Let me know if anyone wants on/off this pinglist.
