The sacrifices and character of US troops will have positive repercussions for years.

In cold Assisi in December 1992, two older Italian couples on the street asked me a question, thinking I was Italian; when they realized I was American (speaking very little Italian), they insisted on taking me to a cafe and buying me a coffee. The wife of one translated for her husband, who started crying; "When my family was hungry in 1945 American soldiers shared their own food with us."

Yes. This election not only represents a great victory for the Iraqi people but also vindication for all those nations that have stuck it out with us.

Who would have thought just a few years ago that Iraq would actually see a free and democratic election?
This is a huge defeat for tyranny and terrorim and the world seems like a much brighter place today.

Don't ever think we will forget Italy's stand with us against what seemed at times, much of the world. America, Italy, and others in the coalition kept the faith this could and would happen. Thank you for being with us.
