To use for "Feats of Strength"?

Sounds more like an Airing of Grievances.

OMG! I used to live in Denia for a while. A sleepy little town - lots of old ruins from the Moslem rule. An odd place to choose for a "statement".

Unlikely to be ETA: they target government targets, and the press report says nothing of their usual phone warning.

(Come to think of it, since they always attack the government, and actually go to effort to minimize civilian casualties by giving timely warnings, should we even consider ETA to be terrorists? Rebels, yes, revolutionaries, yes, misguided, yes, but their activities really do seem to fit the terms 'asymmetric warfare' or 'insurgency', without quite fitting the definition of terrorism.)

Of course, maybe they've decided to be terrorists and this is one of theirs--personally I'm betting on the 'retake al-Andalus' crowd.

The ETA is never going to influence Spanish voters - they've been trying for decades - unless they adopt al-Qaeda tactics. A few railroad bombings in one day and they'll get Basque independence within the week.

Well, that's what I get for making judgements based on sketchy reports. I see from the later posted Babelfish translation of a better report from the Spanish press that there was a warning and it was ETA.

I wonder why they picked the hotel.

And another thing--do all Spanish hotels look alike, or is that the hotel where some of the scene in the Scotch indie film Morven Callar were shot?

Hell, why struggle to take over a hell hole like Iraq. Diversify. Look for a nice climate. You've seen you can have Spain, go there.

The terrorists know that at least the Spanish Socialists will surrender. They aren't making much progress in Iraq, though.

This cannot be true. Spain bent over for the terrorists. I am certain that they have now earned peace with them... /heavy, dripping sarcasm

But I thought they were safe from terrorist attacks after voting for the candidate chosen by the terrorist.Maybe the terrorist have another demand that the Spanish people could meet, like surrender. So far the terrorist are playing the Spanish like a bunch of French wimps.

Very typical for ETA calling before the explosion.

Bye the way. Al Qaeda didn't swing the election. The stupid former Spanish prime minister did the swing himself claiming ETA while having evidence for Al Qaeda. He wanted to fool the people and therefore his party lost the election.

ETA terror caused more than 800 dead in other 30 years. The territory where the Basque live is still a part of Spain and France.

It's not always been like that (Barcelona, June 1988, 21 casualties in a supermarket) and if it is not still like that is because:

-They can´t
- Even if they could, that became too unpopular among their own supporters. I call that marketing but not humanity.

I know it was not your intention but please don't fall in these people's strategy.

I'm hardly suggesting any sympathy for ETA, or that they are in any way right, or that their tactics are not wrong, or that the Spanish authorities shouldn't deal with them harshly, just suggesting that we be precise in our use of language:

Terrorism is a tactic, an evil tactic which seeks to sew terror among the populace by killing civilians unpredictably. Terrorists are people who employ this tactic. In recent time at least, ETA has used a different, while still reprehensible, tactic.

But this is impossible... the Spanish did just what the terrorists told them to... they elected Zapatero.

Peace in our time!
This can't be happening...

I know, I know. But for us ETA is quite an old thing (before I was born) so for us it difficult to see them as any other thing but plain terrorists. Maybe they are having a hard time (not because of their will but because of the actions of spanish police) but we are not likely to change an impression that we have formed day by day after years.

I have said in my post that I knew it was not your intention but I still wanted to insist in that point.

Well, considering that the last President that we had in Spain who belonged to the same party as ZP started a dirty war against ETA by hiring mercenaries I don't know if ETA was exactly wishing them to go back to the government.

Not all terrorist aim the same although all of them use more or less the same way or at least the same despise for other's life, what a shitty world this is...

Point well taken, good fortune to your fellow Spaniards who are investigating and trying to bring ETA to justice.

I made my point partly because it drive me mad when the USS Cole bombing is called terrorism. While al Qaeda are undoubtedly terrorists, the Cole attack was not an instance of terrorism, but an unprovoked act of war--it targetted a military target and can hardly be seen as intending to sew terror among any populace.
