Mexican, U.S. Officials Reconcile Concerns About Border Violence
The Associated Press ^ | Jan 29, 2005

MEXICO CITY (AP) - The United States and Mexico sought to defuse their spat over a U.S. alert about drug-gang violence along the border, issuing a joint statement Saturday in which Washington said its announcement was not meant to keep Americans from traveling south of the border.

Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez and U.S. Ambassador Tony Garza met over breakfast, the joint statement said, to review actions taken by the Mexican government to combat organized crime in northern Mexico, where a surge in killings and kidnappings has been linked to battles between drug gangs.

Garza, the statement said, insisted that the State Department announcement did not recommend that Americans avoid traveling to Mexico, but only that they take precautions in specific areas,

President Vicente Fox intervened in the diplomatic flap on Friday, saying violence near the border did not threaten the two nations' strong relationship.

The State Department issued the travel alert last week, telling Americans that violent crime, including murder and kidnapping, had increased along the Mexican side of the border. Mexican officials said the alert was an exaggeration.

The State Department alert was accompanied by a letter from Garza saying that the lack of security near the U.S. border could have a "chilling" effect on trade and tourism.

On Saturday, Garza said his letter was intended to give "fuller context" and "highlight the fact that the wave of border violence is a result of the successful efforts of President Fox's administration in the fight against organized crime." He said Mexico had increased federal law enforcement operations in the border region with support from the Mexican Army in its effort to combat organized crime.

Garza, nevertheless, restated deep U.S. concern for the safety of American citizens in the border region.

"Both officials noted that their governments recognize that drug trafficking and associated crime do not recognize any borders," according to the joint statement.

I love and support President Bush on just about all issues except this one.   He's forced me to drawn a line in the sand with Mexico, and their illegal alien invasion of America.   I can't support him or anybody on this.   If we can't protect and control our own borders, then the war in Iraq is an effort in futility.

Absolutely amazing.

With that, I'm going to bed! Goodnight, FITZ, thanks for all your first hand information.

JB, I wish I had the words to sustain you in what you deal with on a daily basis. Some of us out here are trying. We'll do what we can.

Somebody needs to call a surgeon to detach President Bush's lips from Vicente Fox's posterior.

Where is Dr. Kildare when we need him??

Thanks for the thoughts, but everybody is entitled to a hobby. Mine just has the built in advantage of being politically incorrect. :P

Sorry I didn't add much to tonight's discussions, but I treated myself to a day on the range today. It's kind of hard to type and clean guns at the same time. On the bright side, anything bigger than 4 inches within 800 yards is once again confirmed as an instant menu item.

Good choice for removing lips from posteriors. Young Doctor Kildare (Richard Chamberlain) turned out to be gay. Oops!

I may have mis-typed into instead of across --- but the whole point of the State Dept warning was to warn Americans about the dangers of travel to Mexico. The USA government has every right and duty to advise American citizens that certain countries are becoming quite dangerous and warn them against travel to those places. The point of this thread is that the Mexican government has demanded our government has not got this right --- even threatened to take action against us with the UN for doing so.

How do you possibly justify that????

Are you on the payroll of the Mexican government?

And NOBODY mentioned Mexican gardeners --- and that's not what this thread is about --- it is about their very corrupt government and the wimps in our own who constantly back down to their corrupt government. It's completely absurd that a warning to American citizens that travel in Mexico could end up being very dangerous is something that cannot be done --- because Vicente Fox says so!

27 abducted American citizens isn't enough for you? Imagine being the family of the girls in the laredo missing link --- and sure --- they did a very stupid thing and that was to go to Mexico --- but at the time there were no such warnings. And sure it's likely they're from recent immigrantion and had more ties with Mexico than with the USA and that was the reason for them going there --- not many Americans in their right minds go to party in Mexico anymore --- but that's beside the point --- this is about our government warning only US citizens that it is not safe to do so.

Why do you care about Mexicans killing Mexicans or American "tourists" being kidnapped.

Exactly what is your relationship with the corrupt government of Vicente Fox that you think the American government has no right to make such a warning to Americans??? We no longer have sovreignty? Is that your point? Mexico rules? We must bend over and do whatever they say?

And one more thing --- why should the American people care if there is a revolution in Mexico and these jackasses are run out?
