Mexican, U.S. Officials Reconcile Concerns About Border Violence
The Associated Press ^ | Jan 29, 2005

MEXICO CITY (AP) - The United States and Mexico sought to defuse their spat over a U.S. alert about drug-gang violence along the border, issuing a joint statement Saturday in which Washington said its announcement was not meant to keep Americans from traveling south of the border.

Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez and U.S. Ambassador Tony Garza met over breakfast, the joint statement said, to review actions taken by the Mexican government to combat organized crime in northern Mexico, where a surge in killings and kidnappings has been linked to battles between drug gangs.

Garza, the statement said, insisted that the State Department announcement did not recommend that Americans avoid traveling to Mexico, but only that they take precautions in specific areas,

President Vicente Fox intervened in the diplomatic flap on Friday, saying violence near the border did not threaten the two nations' strong relationship.

The State Department issued the travel alert last week, telling Americans that violent crime, including murder and kidnapping, had increased along the Mexican side of the border. Mexican officials said the alert was an exaggeration.

The State Department alert was accompanied by a letter from Garza saying that the lack of security near the U.S. border could have a "chilling" effect on trade and tourism.

On Saturday, Garza said his letter was intended to give "fuller context" and "highlight the fact that the wave of border violence is a result of the successful efforts of President Fox's administration in the fight against organized crime." He said Mexico had increased federal law enforcement operations in the border region with support from the Mexican Army in its effort to combat organized crime.

Garza, nevertheless, restated deep U.S. concern for the safety of American citizens in the border region.

"Both officials noted that their governments recognize that drug trafficking and associated crime do not recognize any borders," according to the joint statement.

" The United States and Mexico sought to defuse their spat"

It's not a "spat". They hate us and have for years. They want what we have but the only way they have of getting it is to get us to give it to them and they're doing a damned good job of it. The elites in both our nations don't care who's paying the bill as long as it's not them.

"Remember how in the late nineties, shortly after GWB began talking about running for President, rumors circulated that there were old photos of him dancing naked on a bar? "

I thought all the Buchanan pukes had slinked away forever after getting only four tenths of one percent of the vote after running one of the most racists campaigns in history.

Why are you repeating their old slander?

The Mexican leaders apparently made their threat and our leaders are backing down.

This comes to mind.

In other words, Fox laid on the Bush gang and they caved in to do what Fox wanted. NO matter if AMERICANS get murdered.

The Mexican gangs, cartels, criminals, murderers and kidnappers were furious over the possible dcrease in the number of potential gringo targats that might have resulted. They demanded their boy, Fox, intervene to protect their criminal interests. Fox, to protect his cut of the criminals' take jumped to it and, thus, this snnouncement.

The fact that 100s of federal officers are now on the Mexican side of the border only means that the take will have to be split up into more portions. Gringo sacrificial lambs are free to cross the border at their own risks. Fox is wrting the letters of amazment that will place all blame on the Americans for the gringos who are murdered and kidnapped in the coming weeks.

Do you realize that all the Laredo abducted are hispanics --- very likely recent immigrants from Mexico --- so do you think their abductions should be ignored just because Vicente Fox, Creel, and the rest demand we must ignore them? Americans along the border --- which include immigrants from Mexico who became Americans should not be warned that these abductions took place?

Take a look at the the link I posted in post 20 --- and you think we need to ignore that they've been abducted into Mexico for some reason you claim is race? Most likely they've suffered the same fate as so many of the Mexican woman and girls in another border town in Mexico --- and your heros in the Mexican government do nothing about that either.

But nevermind --- Fox and Creel seem to be able to very easily castrate our leaders --- next our government will encourage all to take a trip down to Mexico and spend as much money as we can. They'll make a statement that it's perfectly safe over there --- or whatever Vicente tells them to state.

"This thread is almost up to 50 post. "

And the Mexican/Bush haters still haven't figured out that this article has nothing to do with illegal immigrants. Amazing how the mind can be rotted by jealousy, fear and insecurity.

Word of another good shootout right after midnight Friday, but this time near Ciudad Obregon south of Arizona. Fourteen bad guys with AK-47s and grenades taking on the cops in a running gun battle.

Sounds to me like a lovely place to vacation.

"there's a psychopathology taking control of mexico.

unlike many countries around the world, mexico is NOT moving forward in a constructive manner."

I can't disagree with that.

FITZ, the problem of violence in Mexico has nothing to do with illegal immigrants or President Bush. I'm trying to figure out which dog in this fight is your's.

Give me a hint will you? Why do you care about Mexicans killing Mexicans or American "tourists" being kidnapped. If you don't want to be killed, don't go to Mexico to buy drugs vacation.

There's no way you can get any traction out of this to punish or stop illegal gardeners.

Bayourod thinks that the need for cheap illegal labor far exceeds that of national security. Unfortunately I think both he and Bush are reading from the same V. Fox written book.

I'm not so sure Mexico exists any more other than as lines on a map. Its government certainly exists only in theory and has about the same authority as the student government at a local middle school.

The Mexican government has no control over the area immediately south of me. The cartels run everything. They own the police, the politicians, and the military.

"you think we need to ignore that they've been abducted into Mexico for some reason you claim is race?"

FITZ, this is getting awfully tiring. Can any of you anti-Mexicans see past your hatred/jealousy to even read a simple article?

The link you insisted I look at says nothing whatsoever about any Americans being abducted IN THE UNITED STATES AND TAKEN ACROSS THE BORDER. It is only about Americans who went over into across the border to Mexico.

Now put your drink down and pay attention.

The article reads: "Laredoans Abducted Across The Border"
But you misread:
"they've been abducted into Mexico"

As much as you may wish, this article has nothing whatsoever to do with Mexican gardeners.

(now I see why it has a clinical designation)
