The field for the Texas House District 121 race shrunk to three candidates Friday when Republican Glen S. Starnes withdrew from the race, although his name will remain on the ballot.
"I believe that the Democrats are waging a very strong campaign, and I do not want even one vote displaced for a Republican in that district," said Starnes, a financial adviser.
The election is Feb. 5; early voting runs through Tuesday.
Starnes, 39, was one of two Republicans seeking the seat. The other, Joe Straus III, already has garnered key endorsements from elected area leaders, including U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith, state Sen. Jeff Wentworth and County Commissioner Lyle Larson.
Starnes said he plans to add his name to the list of endorsements and actively campaign for Straus, 45.
Because the ballots already have been printed, Starnes' name will remain on the ballot, and his vote totals will be reported election night, said officials with the Bexar County Elections Department.
Also on the ballot are Democrat Rose Spector, 71, and independent Paul Silber, 80.
Spector, a former Texas Supreme Court justice and an adjunct law professor at the University of Texas School of Law, said she would like to see a restructuring of the tax system to better fund Texas schools.
Silber was a Democrat in the Texas House from 1970 to 1971 and was chairman of the committee on school finance. He said that experience would serve him well in Austin.

Rose Spector...any relation to...?
How did this vacancy appear?
A special election to replace state Rep. Elizabeth Ames Jones, who was picked by Gov. Perry for the Texas Railroad Commission.
Arlen spells is Specter.
Rose Spector was one of those once popular TX Democrats swept off the Supreme Court when the Republicans won every statewide office, beginning in 1996. She was not amused.
Does Elizabeth Jones have to be confirmed by the state senate to become railroad commissioner? Why did Charles Matthews leave the board after quite a few years?
Has Perry named a successor yet for Secretary of State Geoffrey Connor?
I do not know
The secretary of state website still shows Connor's picture, and there is no notice that he is leaving the position. But he resigned in November.
