Cold War Certificate (Are you a Cold War Veteran?)
U.S. Army ^ | Jan 29, 2005 | gobucks

Posted on 01/29/2005 3:31:59 AM PST by gobucks

Figured that a few Cold War vets should know about this.

*snip* Is this for real?

* Yes. In the 1998 National Defense Authorization Act, the Secretary of Defense approved awarding Cold War Recognition Certificates to all members of the armed forces and qualified federal government civilian personnel who faithfully and honorably served the United States any time during the Cold War era, Sept. 2, 1945, through Dec. 26, 1991.

* Applicants must certify that their service was "faithful and honorable", and they must supply a copy of a supporting document which proves that they served during the Cold War era. The certificate may be awarded posthumously to those whose relatives apply on their behalf.

* There is no charge for a Cold War Recognition Certificate. Note that no medal has been authorized or issued for Cold War Recognition.

* The program is scheduled to run for 10 years, so there is plenty of time to send in your request and supporting document.

I did my bit for the cold war.

I was a member of a Marine Detachment aboard Navy ships for my first tour. Which leads to a funny story.

In damn near every port there was at least one soviet-paid local who would buy servicemen drinks and try to get them to talk about their jobs. I got totally wasted on their dime, while feeding them total bull---t. Once I told one of these idiots that I was the ships hangman! He ate it up and bought me more drinks.

I wonder what his paymaster had to say when he made his report. :)

Thanks for the post.

I remember when this was announced, and maybe I should apply now. I didn't back then because I didn't wish to have a crap weasel signature of William Cohen (or was it William J. Perry?) hanging ANYWHERE on a wall of mine.

Donald Rumsfeld's signature might have a similar effect on visiting liberals and that would be cool. ;)

That's a good one. I fairly-regularly throw it in the face of lefties.

The detailed spreadsheet *.gif that's in a link on that page, is pretty amazing.

Thanks for the report. Here are some of those crosses (and, interestingly, they are crosses, not plaques)

from Web Page History of Berlin Wall.

me either ...; but more than a few folks these days scratch their heads and say 'huh?, what was the 'cold war'?

The fact that out of all official gov't recogition for all kinds of conflicts, all that is out there is this certificate, for a decades long bona fide war, it just seemed to me to be .... not appropriate.

And of course, given the make up of so many of the liberal democrats, I started to have suspicions that maybe it was not totally an accident that so little noise is made about this...; (given MY make-up, I guess it is not an accident I bother to pay attention ... but sub service can mess with your sleep and coffee habits :) )
