I guess I don't understand the American health system good enough. In Norway, we off course have a state provided health care system. The state is the boss, and we are at its mercy. If this is only about the cost of health insurance(which I don't believe) it should be fairly easy to solve.
Be a free man (or woman ;-) and pay for your own health insurance.
But, I guess it isn't that simple :-)
Individual health insurance policies are enormously expensive here. The thing about the insurance at work is that it's a "group" policy where the costs of healthcare are spread over the entire group. So, IF smokers were a lot more expensive to maintain every year, then there could be a cost differential between them and the antis. But that has yet to be demonstrated. It's more like, given the anti-smoking pogrom that's taking place here, it would follow from the assumptions the kommissars make that there would be more costs. They just haven't been able to demonstrate that statistically, which isn't slowing them down in the slightest.
Actually, a study was done here in the US, that smokers actually save the government money when it comes to Social Security payouts and Medicare (socialized medical care for the elderly). They die sooner.
