Yeah sure I agree when times are good and other sources of cheaper energy are available...but what about the times when such energy may not be availble...hmmmm?

If you view energy and heat sources in terms of investments that need to pay for themselves over time, assuming relative stability in the world over 5, 10, 30 years, then perhaps your view would be the correct one. But if you view solar sources of energy as a means of independence in case these other sources of energy have dried up due to war, politics or natural disasters, then the cost may well be worth it!
