Rick Dembow January 28, 2005 -- A stunning 28-year-old actress died in her fiancé's arms yesterday after a Lower East Side thug answered her challenge "What are you going to do, shoot us?" by firing a single bullet into her chest, cops said. Nicole DuFresne, of Brooklyn, had just left a trendy bar with her fiancé and another couple when they were confronted at about 3:15 a.m. by four muggers two men and two women at the corner of Clinton and Rivington streets, police said. One of the thugs, who was carrying a gun, demanded money. DuFresne's fiancé, Jeffrey Sparks, 28, not seeing the mugger had a gun and not taking the request seriously, tried to push past the man.

No, they weren't junkies. They were teenage boys showing off to the girls they were with. The kid with the gun has emotional problems and freaked out.
They may have come from the area (projects on Avenue D/Columbia Street or even Maseryk Towers. Or they could have come from anywhere--even Jersey.
If they were from the nabe, the cops would have collared them by now. So, unless one of them comes forward, the crime is likely unsolved.
If there is video, then maybe. I have my doubts.
I apologize for your lack of reading comprehension.
Real men don't whine.
She was a drunk, snotty, arrogant Williamsburg artist-type who got in a crazy gun-wielding teenage punks face while her stupid, cowardly boyfriend was off to the races. Her ignorance of the situation she was in got her killed.
Comes to mind the American hostage getting blown away in "Killing Zoe".
The killer(s) should be apprehended, tried, convicted and executed.
This is NYC. If they do get caught, and are tried as adults, the shooter will get murder two. Seven years max with good behavior, and parole.
Nope--Hell's Kitchen (Clinton) is in the West 40s...about 3 to 4 miles away from this area called the Lower East Side.
When they catch the kid -- and they will -- he'll get a heavy sentence. High profile case. Girl looks like a prom queen. The kid will get 20 minimum and they won't plead it...
thanks for the sanity post!
Two were women? When someone say's the word "mugger"...I've never immediately thought of the mugger being a female. I wonder if they were just along for the "ride"...so to speak?
Bad outcome, to a bad situation. But I'm sure it was just the "gun's" fault....The two men, and two women...were just taking the gun for a walk..and "it" decided to mug those people, and then got angry and "fired".
FRegards,
DuFresne, who had once been raped and listed "stage combat" as a skill on her résumé, had challenged the thug who just pistol-whipped her fiancé by saying, "What are you going to do, shoot us?"
"She just wanted to protect Jeffrey," said DuFresne's aunt, Barbara Page, 65. "She would say what was on her mind."
The mugger first tried to shoot Gibson, but his gun did not fire. He then turned and fired a single shot into DuFresne's chest, piercing both her heart and a lung.
Has this come up in the thread yet? I had not seen this before. The shooter first attempted to shoot the other girl. Why, if Dufresne said what she allegedly said would the shooter FIRST fire at the OTHER girl?
This plus the way the Nath guy was said to have taken Sparks by the arm and walked away after the pistol whipping----walked AWAY from the two girls, apparently stationary inches from the muggers? Some of this doesn't add up. That may just be the nature of recollections and the powers of observation or lack thereof on the part of the suviving girl and guys.
For example, why would Nath, Gibson's boyfriend and the one who grabbed Scott and ran---why would Nath totally abandon his girlfriend by pulling Scott and basically running away?
Or did the perp attempt to shoot the OTHER girl in response to the vic's saying "What are you going to do, shoot us"?
Either way seems weird.
Errata: In the last paragraph, where I said "Scott" I meant JEFFREY.
Nope. This isn't TV and this ain't America.
I wasn't commenting from the position of just watching TV.
I know. No offense intended, just illustrating the point that life is cheap in NYC, even those used as tabloid fodder. I was stunned to see out of touch this place is in this area when I first moved.
No, no. I wasn't making an attempt to impunge your position. It is the correct response. However, this is not a good place, despite Guliani.
"Every person Ive ever known of who choose to live or work in that part of town was an arch flaming liberal.
To be Uber cool. And I've hung out in many parts of Manhattan late at night, over the last 9 years. The Lower East Side is one of the few places I've ever been leery of."
We just pretend to be 'Uber cool' down here to disuede fatheads from hanging out in the neighborhood. Apparently this system is working well.
"I hope the people who are involved in this turn themselves in," said fiancé Jeffrey Sparks, 29.
F-ing idiot.
"Nicole was coming up angry and ready to kick some ass," said Nath, a 32-year-old actor, who had been drinking with his three friends at the popular bar Max Fish before the attack. "I don't know what she said. Not 'Bring it on,' but 'What are you f-----g doing!' " Nath recalled tearfully.
Great. Nothing like an unarmed -- and likely drunk -- pacifist girl who's probably never thrown a punch in her life trying to confront a thug with a gun.
Once again, if one is unarmed and confronted by a menacing thug who has a gun, has already assaulted someone with you and is intent on robbing you, the point it to get away alive and safe, not be a hero or do something stupid so that you can brag about how "brave" you were for standing up to a mugger with a gun -- assuming you survive to tell the tale.
What a bunch of idiots. The situation went out of control because they were drunk and stupid.
I especially love the boyfriend's comments. His stupid girlfriend took a bullet because he's a coward and ran away from her.
"Nicole was coming up angry and ready to kick some ass,"
A fearless woman ready to kick ass when her friends are hurt. Sounds like a wonderful neighborhood girl and indicative of why I like it here. She will be missed.
I am very saddened by her death -- and especially for her family and friends who have to cope with the tragic aftermath. These things wreak hell for a long, long time on the survivors.
But to call her "fearless" is absurd. Clueless is more like it.
A smart person knows not to try to "kick ass" (however much yelling at an armed kid from the projects who is in the process of a mugging may be "kicking ass") when she is at a severe disadvantage -- as in being unarmed. Me? I'd rather you think of me as a coward and someone you wouldn't want in your vaunted neighborhood, but at least I'd still be alive.
There's no nobility in dying a stupid, needless death.
And he hopes that they'll turn themselves in. Riiiight.
"I'd rather you think of me as a coward and someone you wouldn't want in your vaunted neighborhood"
you can come to my vaunted neighborhood and if anyone hurts you I'll kick their a@$.
