Rick Dembow January 28, 2005 -- A stunning 28-year-old actress died in her fiancé's arms yesterday after a Lower East Side thug answered her challenge — "What are you going to do, shoot us?" — by firing a single bullet into her chest, cops said. Nicole DuFresne, of Brooklyn, had just left a trendy bar with her fiancé and another couple when they were confronted at about 3:15 a.m. by four muggers — two men and two women — at the corner of Clinton and Rivington streets, police said. One of the thugs, who was carrying a gun, demanded money. DuFresne's fiancé, Jeffrey Sparks, 28, not seeing the mugger had a gun and not taking the request seriously, tried to push past the man.

I don't know if things are different in NJ. but here in NY the problem is that the District Attorneys never ask for the death penalty and I believe that it can't be imposed without that.

It goes without saying that this a tragic and needless loss of life. However, I'm even more saddened by the role she played in it.
For one thing, don't shoot off your mouth to a guy with a gun, unless you have bigger and better fire power.
And another is that while we all *should* be able to walk in any neighborhood at any time of the day or night without fear of being attacked, that just isn't reality.
I've lived in this city far longer than she did, and I never found myself at the end of someone else's gun, or even mugged. Is that good luck? Perhaps. But I'm sure that the fact that I don't hang out in "edgy" neighborhoods in the middle of the night has made a difference. I also remain alert and aware of my surroundings at all times -- and make sure to move away from anyone who looks potentially dangerous.
When I am out at night and see a small group of thuggish-looking kids, I avoid them and try to stay near other people and/or well-lit stores. I also realize that it isn't the time to try out my latest jokes.
I am so sorry that this woman died -- and for her family and friends who have to cope with the aftermath -- but we have to realize that we often have more control over our fate than we realize and shouldn't act stupid.

Talking about this in the office today, one of the guys made what I think is a good point: if this were the 70s or 80s, she probably wouldn't have been so flip with the perp since street crime was so much more common then. But now, with serious crime like this so rare, it was much less likely to happen and she said what she shouldn't have. This was so unnecessary and absolutely tragic.
I would agree with you...unless or until they pistol whipped my significant other. That coupled with the fact that there were four assailants would probably make me take a different tact. So, given those two extenuating circumstances, I think she made an unfortunate choice to pursue confrontation and bravado. There I respectfully disagree.

A side note about neighborhood names: In San Francisco near City College, Hazelwood Avenue is the next one over from Valdez Avenue (Hazelwood being the captain of the Exxon Valdez).

Yiddish for rag. Clothing industry was known as the rag trade by the self deprecating millionaires who ran it. Mostly Jewish who used to run what it did in New York City. All known as the fashion business these days. Old horn dog Jagger knows where to find the pretty young things. Where they work and model.
Not bad. I'm impressed. The rag trade is pretty much all gone now...to China. And, oddly, they've given up Mandarin and started speaking Yiddish...
If you look at Jagger's songs, there are repeated references to clothing, fabrics, etc from the earliest lyrics.
