Survey finds growing number of liberal students at UC Berzerkeley (no kidding?)

BERKELEY, Calif. The number of student liberals at one of America's most liberal campuses is on the rise.

A survey of freshmen at the University of California, Berkeley found that the number of students who call themselves liberal is higher than a decade ago and approaching Vietnam War-era levels.

The fall 2004 survey found that just over half of students identified as liberal, compared with 12 percent as conservative and 37 percent as "middle of the road."

That is higher than 1990, when about 43 percent identified themselves as liberal compared to 18 percent as conservative. It's much higher than 1982, when liberals held only a 33 percent edge to conservatives' 21 percent.

Nationally, for the class entering in fall 2004, liberal freshmen outnumbered conservatives 27 percent to 23 percent.

I think the students at Berkley follow the lemming theory. They are drawn to the school because of the nuts and once there just follow the crowd without any thought. They are led by profs who thought it was the greatest time of their lives when they protested against the Viet Nam War.

Usually, coming out of college, liberals outnumber conservatives, then over the course of years, the liberals start turning conservative, but stay partisian democrat.

Eventually, alot of them wind up republican.

There is a growing conservative (granted, its the "south park" types) movement among college kids today, based on increasing numbers in the college republicans, but how far its spreading is still debatable.

Remember, this is a school, where self identified marixst/communist outnumber republicans.

This is a very telling statistic. These kids will only become more conservative as time goes on.

We'll if I go to Berkeley in a few years (one of the schools I'm looking at) I'll have to have some fun with the libs.

Biggest DUH headline, you got that right! They don't call it UC Bezerkeley for nuthin, ya know!

I have to say the most fun for me here in the Bay Area is reading the editorials written by John Q. Liberal Public in the local opinion pages. I call them the scream pages. You get the occasional sane voice in the wilderness, I guess it would be the 12 percent of conservatives who live here, but mostly it's BUSH BAD, BUSH VERY, VERY BAD, and IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT!!!

"Eventually, alot of them wind up republican."

Just as soon as they have to go out and earn a living and pay taxes.

If you choose to come to UCB, you likely will really like it here. I do. And you should definitely try to have some fun with the libs!

The two most famous products to come out of UC Berekley are BSD and LSD; both probably by the same group of leftists.

Very true. My generation is just finding its voice, and we're far more conservative than average. The world's in for a big change from Gen X.

lol! Merry, I think you are right. I was there. And the only ones who wanted to go to Berkeley, are the libs, in the county of the SF Bay Area that I lived in. Most all other students, the serious ones, were very serious about going out of state to continue their ed. The idea of attending U-Berkeley was anathema to most students I encountered. I know students of all ages commuting from north Bay to San Jose State U rather than go to U-Berkeley.
