I saw that. Looks like it hit and slid along the port side.

Shouldn't this be classified? Why are photographers allowed to get so close? Lousy Op Sec, IMHO

"Why are photographers allowed to get so close?"

Because those are Navy photographs taken by Navy photographers, who had them cleared by the Navy for public release.

I just read that the San Francisco was scheduled to be decommissioned in 2017. If this is ture, the Navy might try to repair the damage, since she'll be good for another 12 years or so. Although it might take some time to repair that kind of damage; it would involve essentially building a new nose section.

Does anyone know if it would be practical to take the nose section of a LA sub scheduled to be scrapped and fit it on to the San Francisco?

I don't think so. This looks like a Trident class sub

It is an SSN (attack sub) not an SSBN (Trident sub).

It was his resposibility to communicate to his superiors the fact that the area in which he was operating was uncharted, and therefore dangerous to move at flank speed in.

You have his charts which list that area as UNCHARTED?

On 688's, the pressure hull IS the outer hull from aft of MBT 3A&B all the way to aft elliptical bulkhead at the shaft seals,

The (visible, extremely serious) buckling is confined to the MBT area - though THOSE frames may have pulled and distorted the pressure hull in that area.

Aft of those frames the rest of the hull "appears" to still be in concentric circles.

BUT - Check with a body shop operator about a severe crash to the left front bumper and engine mounts.... Even the doors on the right rear can get distorted and thrown out of alignment.

Here, the whole bow might be thrown to the right - away from the collision.

Figure THAT would be half the cost of building a new boat.

I have to think that the Captain and the crew of this vessel did an incredible job.

I have to think the Captain's career is over.

No, No. It ran into a near-vertical "cliff" from an angle to the left side: not perpendicular into the cliff.

That's no "other boat" damage - Look at the rocks embedded in the bottom and front.

I understand the bottom depth rose from more than 6000 feet to 500 feet in less than 3 minutes travel time of the sub.

Thanks. I had made a couple of posts asking and looked for a diagram but couldn't find one.

All of what you is uninhabited and outside the pressure hull, and much is outside even of the ballast tanks.
