Given the fact that the senators who voted against Thomas were generally the same ones who had voted against Bork, no, I don't believe that opposition to Clarence Thomas was racist. That opposition was wrong, but it wasn't racist.

Race probably is a factor......Republicans are supposed to be the "minority suppression party" and not one that elevates black people to important positions of power. Apparently democrats have to come up with a new schtick, because they've been proven wrong.

Racism though implies these democrats did not vote for Dr. Rice soley because she was black and inferior. They didn't vote for her because she's Republican and totally loyal to Bush.

In other words, they're political partisan hacks.....not racists.
