I want more anecdotal highway stories. I love 'em!
OK.
:-)
Last year I spent some time in south FL, basically from just after Charlie to during Ivan.
When I drive cross country, I set the cruse control at 80. I figger that is fast enough. I keep to the right except to pass, than move back to the right when it is safe to do so.
Well, a bit North of Tampa on I-75 (kinds fits the topic we are discussing) I was passing some slower traffic. Some dipwad driving a pickup/camper combo on steroids started to tailgate me. This was one of those HD pickups, twincab, duelies on the rear, towing a big honkin' camper hitched using a fifth-wheel mounted in the P/U bed.
This jerk was not content to wait for me to complete my pass and merge right. I did finally get out of his way and he blew past me like nuthin'. ( and I am doing 80)
Half hour later all traffic stops, oncomming traffic is empty. It takes over an hour to get through the traffic jam. Yup, there in the front of the jam is the single vehicle crash that caused it all. That same rig, facing the wrong direction, after flipping over a few times. Judging from the mess in the road and the bodybags present, he killed most of his family that day.
Funny thing, on that trip the only crashes I saw were in FL. And all 5 crashes were nasty ones.
