I'm not gay, I don't have a scraggly goatee and my WinXP machines run very fast and very smoothly, doing specialized tasks Macs can't do.

Sorry, Steve-O. Go peddle your faux-hipster nonsense elsewhere.

Well I'm a conservative Republican and I have an iMac at home (my second) and 2 G-4s (and several Gateway PCs) at work. I hate Apple's politics and their computers are more expensive. It's the Mac's user friendly 'drag and drop' software layout that appeals to me. Very intuitive and was easy for me to learn. PCs are much the same now but Macs are still better IMHO. iTunes rocks! At work I use the Mac version of Final Cut Pro; that's great too.

I'm pretty sure Mac tried something like this before, a computer called 'The Cube'. It crashed and burned big time, probably 'cause of the price and that it didn't LOOK like a computer.

Rush is a big Mac user, for the same reasons I am. Some things are just worth the extra money. Cheaper isn't always better. Rush would be an outstanding spokesperson for Apple, and would love to do so. But my gut is that Apple dosen't have the cajones to hire him. Their loss...

.... Rush is an ardent Mac evangelist ....

Why do Mac people have to lie. Rush is no evangelist. He said on his show countless times, it's what I learned on and I don't want to change. How is that an evangelist?

I wonder if being a Mac Republican coincides with being a South Park Republican ;-) I understand where they are going with it, but I think in the end, people are going to choose what's best for them or their budget.

It's interesting that young families worried about porn/pop ups/spyware/etc. is mentioned - this came up in a discussion at our church, and several people were interested in the fact that Macs are a bit safer when it comes to that stuff. Apple was targeting Windows users with the Mac mini, but maybe they should have been targeting families instead.

As far as politics being involved, I don't think it's as big of a deal as many others think - ffter all, how many of us buy Chevys, Fords, Dodges, etc. knowing they are made with union labor.

Rush has had his sales people try to get an account from Apple.

They want no part of him.

For the price of a typical Mac you'd think they could afford to add a second mouse button, maybe even a wheel...

"Andy Hertzfeld’s new book"

I've not tried a computer-age topic book in a long time (the Jobs bio by, hmm, Levy? may have been the only one I've ever finished) but I've always liked Hertzfeld's 'tude about software engineering. I think it was AH who had an epiphany at home for how the original Quickdraw routines could be done to make them operate smoothly, having spent weeks struggling with it. He headed back to work at a late hour, was in a car crash, woke up in the hospital, and his idea for Quickdraw was still in his head. ;')

That looks like a nifty offer from Apple. I would enjoy trying it, but the specs look pretty slim. Granted, it would be foolish to expect a 200 GB hard drive and 1 GB of memory at that price, but will this machine as advertised be able to operate efficiently?

Mac experts, can you help me out?

I would buy a MAC if the price actually would come down to what PC's cost.
