Arkin's linked to the Institute for Policy Studies, a KGB/Cuban front group set up during the Vietnam War era and involved in anti-military news leaks like Seymour Hersh's My Lai story and the "New York Times" Pentagon Papers leak. Back in the 80s Arkin and an IPS associate/NYT editor suspected in the Pentagon Papers leak, Leslie Gelb, leaked classified nuclear defense contingency plans that severely strained the NATO alliance, helped unravel the ANZUS alliance, and complicated relations with Japan (S. Steven Powell, Covert Cadre, p. 362).
