Here's my take on the LBJ did it theory after reading McClellan.

In addition to other corruption, LBJ was deeply implicated in the massive, headline grabbing Billie Sol Estes scandal. A federal Agriculture Department investigator was gathering and would soon have sufficient evidence for a prosecution of LBJ -- with his enemy Bobby Kennedy to have a decisive role in the decision.

LBJ correctly feared that his world was about to come crashing down. So the Ag Department investigator was murdered before he finished his investigation and a corrupt Texas sheriff and judge arranged a verdict of suicide. This much is well-established and McClellan's book cannot be justly faulted for repeating it.

In addition, McClellan recounts his experience as an attorney in the law firm that represented LBJ in his election rigging extensive corrupt dealings, eventually learning that the head of the firm had engineered the JFK assassination and cover up. Supposedly, the head of the firm used the support of Texas oil interests and a hit man named Malcolm Wallace, whom he had also used to kill the Ag Department investigator and who also killed a too talkative former brother in law of LBJ.

Oswald seems to have become known to the plotters through petroleum geologist George de Morenschildt. Oswald was recruited based on his Marxist beliefs and set up to take the fall as the putative lone assassin. Ruby killing Oswald seems to have been an improvisation after Oswald slipped the police net and the intended fatal, blaze of glory shoot out.

With LBJ as President, and his longtime friend and ally J. Edgar Hoover able to control the investigation, incriminating evidence was ignored or destroyed. LBJ repeatedly floated the plausible Castro-did-it line, with a warning that public knowledge of it would lead to a nuclear war. Various CIA and FBI lapses and embarrassments relating to Oswald and other matters like anti-Castro plots helped assure their participation in a cover up based on their bureaucratic interests, but neither agency was involved in the assassination.

Key parts of McClellan's account rest on slender and equivocal evidence, with much depending on his battered personal credibility. In some instances, McClellan has taken up dubious assassination claims simply because they fit with his account. But there is one stunning item of information from McClellan that I have never seen directly refuted: the identification of Malcolm Wallace's fingerprint on a box at the sniper's nest in the Texas School Book Depository.

This sole unidentified fingerprint has long been a mystery. The match to Malcolm Wallace was supposedly made by a renowned expert unaware of the JFK assassination link. IN a few years, when automated fingerprint matching software develops further, the validity of that identification will be easier for non-experts to assess.

For me, McClellan's LBJ did it theory is more credible in concept than most of the assassination conspiracy theories. That Oswald acted alone is also plausible, but there is far too much credible and troubling evidence against that to accept it as conclusive. When Lady Bird croaks we may learn more. McClellan claims that in his last months, LBJ decided that he wanted the truth told, and the death of his widow may prompt the release of dispositive information.

Thank you for the info....even when it happened, when I was 15, I thought LBJ did it because he seemed to be the WINNER TAKES ALL when JFK was murdered.
