OIL-FOOD PROBERS GRILL KOFI
New York Post ^ | 1/26/05 | Niles Lathem

Secretary-General Kofi Annan was questioned yesterday — his third grilling — by the independent commission probing corruption in the U.N. oil-for-food program, the United Nations said yesterday.

U.N. spokesman Fred Eckhard acknowledged the sessions, saying Annan met twice last year with the commission, headed by former Federal Reserve Board Chairman Paul Volcker.

"[Annan] has met more than once for an extended period of time with Mr. Volcker and his investigators," Eckhard said.

There have been no specific allegations of wrongdoing leveled at Annan, but the U.N. leader has been fending off calls for his resignation by Republicans on Capitol Hill for presiding over history's biggest financial scandal.

The Volcker commission has raised questions about the overall management of the program and why the United Nations never audited suspicious contracts.

Annan, who was involved in the negotiations that set up the program, also is likely to have been questioned about its origins and why Saddam was given authority to pick the companies with which he would do business.

The NYT continues to try to provide cover for Kofi...this statement is not true, there have been plenty of allegations of wrongdoing on the part of Annan. That's one reason he's been trying to put distance between his son Kojo and himself.

Volker's committee is a cover-up, or has every appearance of being one.

I want Kofi in front of Federal prosecutors answering questions under oath.

Although their news coverage of the oil-for-food scandal has been woefully inadequate, the NYT has published some op-ed investigatory pieces by William Safire. Now that Safire's gone, expect their coverage to be even more non-existent.

They are not really grilling him hard. They put their kid gloves on and then hold both hands behind their back. Kofi is their patron saint. They tread timidly in his presence and will ask no hard questions nor use words with more than two syllables.

I send stinging remarks to Elizabeth Dole strongly suggesting that the US leave the UN; and destroy the building. Her response yesterday wa that we have repaid the $1b in our back payments.

Check it out, boys and girls. I damn near threw up!

If I were W, by God, I would issue an Executive Order to have that building evacuated within 30 days. Part Two of the Executive Order would have the Army Corps of Engineers implode the structure.

Then again... tick... tick... tick...

This POS speaks so slowly and incoherently as if every word is freighted with great importance. I wonder how many questions could be asked?
