"Bush hasn't spoken of a limit to the number of "willing employees." Can anyone doubt that she is right when she says that "up to 5 billion people in the world might want to be 'willing employees' in the United States"?

I believe current economic theory is about to reach the limit of its usefulness just as relativity reached its limits in physics. The continued dependence on the importation of unskilled workers with no allegiance to our cultural principles begs the question if there is another answer to our current definition of 'economic expansion and growth.'

I do believe that Geography is more an issue here than Michelle is giving credit for.

She's still a babe and I'd gladly debate her on plans and cures for the illegal problem.

More of nothing like we've had for 14 or 15 years is not the answer.

Bush's plan is far from perfect but it is a plan. I'd gladly help him tweak it.

Well, that would be quite the "tweaking". Ridge announced today that the 2000 border guards promised will not be funded. First announced there will be no discussion of immigration reform. Looks like the president has all the help he needs.

"There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism...The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin...would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities."

Teddy Roosevelt, Republican President (Speech, New York, 1915)

What employer wouldn't be "willing" to jettison American workers along with all those nasty payroll taxes, health benefits, etc. in exchange for "willing" illegals who they can pay dirt cheap knowing full well a lot their new employee's living expenses will be shifted onto taxpayers.......whatta deal! What Bush is proposing is economic suicide for the middle class..

PILGRIM: One of the most successful border protection programs will be suspended as of January 30th, and that's the busiest time of year for illegal border crossings. A federal contract for unmanned aerial vehicles that patrol the Arizona-Mexico border will expire, and as of now, there are no replacement programs confirmed. Officials say the program is being suspended to evaluate its effectiveness. In the first six months of the program, unmanned aerial vehicles helped catch over 1,200 illegal aliens, and they also helped track down nearly 3,000 pounds of marijuana.

Another successful program is also about to be suspended. The Department of Labor is threatening to end funding for the only survey which tracks the migrant worker population in this country. More than half of those workers are illegal aliens. Bill Tucker reports.
BILL TUCKER, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): The typical farm worker is a 31-year-old male, Hispanic, most likely married with a child and earning less than $12,000 a year from farm work. Just over half of all farm workers are also here illegally. Nearly 80 percent of the workers are from Mexico, very few of whom speak or read English.

We know all of this for only one reason. The National Agricultural Workers Survey, or NAWS.

GREGORY SCHELL, FLORIDA LEGAL SERVICES: This is the only set of data that provides us with a rich demographic view of who the immigrants are, and it gives us a basis to make some informed decisions with respect to immigration. Everything else is anecdotal.

TUCKER: The survey is also the basis on which roughly a billion dollars in education, health and social aid program money is distributed. So why would we stop collecting such useful information? Budget. The Department of Labor says it cannot afford to continue funding this survey, which cost it about $2 million a year. To that end, the department is talking with other agencies about taking over responsibility for the survey.

VERONICA STIVDENT, DEPARTMENT OF LABOR: We plan to continue our discussions with agencies to find the best home for the NAWS survey and to make sure that we continue the NAWS survey in the best way possible, to maximize its utility to its users.

TUCKER: But as of yet, no other agency has agreed to take on the responsibility.

TUCKER: Now, this survey is the only one of its type. It's ironic that its future would seem in doubt just at a time when we are beginning a national debate on the immigration reform and policy, Kitty.

PILGRIM: Bill, who's in favor of discontinuing this, and why?

TUCKER: Well, ironically, nobody is in favor of discontinuing it. People on both sides of the immigration issue say we need this study because it gives us a factual basis on which to base future policy and decisions. So you can go to the either side of the immigration debate, and you'll find fierce defenders, people saying we cannot quit doing this.

The Department of Labor, in its defense, its discretionary spending is at a premium. We can't afford it. Somebody else needs to pick up the tab. Cut of the budget.

I'm fine with this -- right after every single American citizen who is collecting unemployment or welfare is dumped off the rolls. Because until that happens, we have no way of knowing how many citizens are willing to do these jobs. We only know how many are willing to choose not working over working, in return for a small paycheck.

" right after every single American citizen who is collecting unemployment or welfare is dumped off the rolls."

I agree and especially cutting off social services for ILLEGALS. It will be interesting to see however, if the wages offered are all minimum wage.

I had always voted LP in presidential elections before 2004; I voted for Bush (and gave money and volunteered for the GOTV, and gave to the SBVT) because JF'ingK was a traitor; and I wanted to send the strongest possible message.

But; if Bush won't enforce the law; and won't defend the borders; isn't that a form of treason? When Richard Nixon imposed unconstitutional wage-and-price controls, I said I was for impeachment. If President Bush won't fulfill the basic requirements of his office, to defend our borders; I say that we should be talking to our Republican House members, and say:

IMPEACH BUSH!

Whole mafias will spring up to import labor for real and phony jobs and a crack at the teat of the USA. This is a disaster, perhaps one of if not the worst idea that has dribbled out the backside of liberalism to date.

One of our local pro illegal veteran news writers thought the same thing. He got his ass handed to him. She’s good.

The vast majority of workers will come from Mexico, but millions of people around the world will be trying to get jobs also.

Of course, the Presidents plan won’t work and will make things worst, but that’s a whole different argument.

Where I come from, the welfare cases tend to be the native born. This is New York City, which is filled with immigrants. Go to the projects and you will find not immigrants (who live packed in like sardines in row houses in the outer boroughs) but descendents of blacks who came from the south and Puerto Rican migrants who arrived in the 1940s/1950s.

Where the illegals drain social services is through hospital visits and dumping their kids on our lousy public schools.

No offense, but your vote was just the excuse for a mandate Bush was looking for in order to enact programs such as this.

IOW, Message received. I hope you're happy.

No offence taken... and I'm not happy. If it had been anyone but Kerry (even Howie Dean) I wouldn't have done it; and if the media had not been so one-sided, pro-Kerry, I might not have either. My vote was in part a vote against CBS etc. I have regretted my vote for Bush, though the LP's post-election sillyness mitigated that a little. (and they are as bad as Bush on immigration). I went to one Bush rally, as I recall there was a reference to "hardworking moms and dads" ie illegal migrants; no one applauded. His supporters didn't intend to give him "political capital" to spend on amnesty; but he acts as if they did.
