Mon-te-gay is how my neighbor pronounces Montague. Of course, she is from England.

I should have added that my neighbor from England is trying her hardest to imitate Texans' drawl.

In Texas, Montague is pronounced as "mon-TAIG".

The town is the county seat of Montague County (pronounced similarly) and has a population of roughly 200.

They've got a substantial courthouse and a complete courthouse square -- 'cept for one thing. There aren't enough businesses in town to fill up the four opposite sides of the street from the courthouse. As a consequence, the courthouse looks a little naked -- with only about a block-and-a-half's worth of business scattered around the square.

The town is also heavily populated by people of Italian descent -- most of the men with the same name. The family name escapes me, but the men are all named Joe -- and known by "Joe on the hill", "Joe on the square", or "Joe on the creek", etc.

Montague also offers one of the very few permanent bocci courts in the state of Texas. It's right across the street from the courthouse...
