The new security measures at the reopened state Capitol are meant to make the building safer without being intrusive.
State Treasurer Mike Murphy says theyre not doing either.
Murphy has bristled at having to pass through the system of metal detectors and X-ray machines to get to his second-floor office. And he says the Capitol and his office are no safer.
Its a joke, Murphy said in an interview last week. He pointed out that the security system allows people to carry concealed firearms into the building, but it requires most elected officials and their staffs to pass through screening.
Murphy, a Democrat, was re-elected last year to a third four-year term as treasurer, a job that gives him oversight of more than $6 billion in state assets. So its rather ironic that somebody would view me as a threat, if Ive been entrusted with that high volume of the states assets. It just doesnt make any sense to me, he said.
