Your best long-term solution is to back up your drive, wipe the disk, reinstall the OS, install Firefox, and never touch IE again. This formula has worked very well for me in the past getting my less-comp-savvy family members set up in a way that I don't have to do tech support every night.

The only thing that really works is what I call a "computer cancer cure," which is similar to burning out all of a body's bone marrow to eliminate the cancer calls and replacing it.
In other words, you collect all the installation disks you have for your software, make backup copies, if possible, of the document and picture files you want to retain, and reformat your hard drive. Then reinstall you operating system and all of your other software from the installation disks and add a good anti-virus piece of software, if you don't have one. Finally, scan your document and picture files for viruses, clean them, and reinstall them. This is what I did about a year ago when my computer had a massive viral infection.
