On September 11 as the horror was unfolding, did you have any concerns, being in Canada, that something might happen there? Or did it feel or seem like the attack was going to stay south of the border?
When the horror was unfolding on September 11th, I was so stunned that I sat in front of my television for a week. I was as devastated as if it were my own country. I cried so much for the next while. It would just come over me, no matter where I was. I still cry when I see pics of that horrific day. I am tearing up typing this note.
I was too overwhelmed by what had happend to even wonder if anything was going to happen up here.
I have a good friend who worked at the time in a very large elementary school in a predominantly immigrant neighbourhood. The kids were in school when the planes hit. They all went home for lunch (therefore connecting with their lovely parent/s) and came back in quite the celebratory spirit. They danced and chanted Osama bin Laden's name. She was horrified. They knew immediately who was behind it. That tells you who and what we have living up here...and that is a very small city, never mind what is in Toronto or Montreal, etc.
I was pretty sure that it was just America under attack, and was not the least bit surprised when it was found out that some of the evil perps had come over from Canada. Then as time went by, my disgust of the liberal government for not BOLDLY standing beside our friends and neighbours took over.
This is how my heart immigrated to America.
