God Bless and protect our troopers... but I'll curse Reuters personally for this hit job intended to rouse anger against our troops for using an "ancient Iraqi minaret" to protect the citizens of Iraq from terrorists.

I bet 1,000 years ago, Iraqis were using that minaret to defend their city by keeping an eye out for threats. Times change, but some things remain the same.

funny how our troops are not allowed to 'chip' the walls of a mosque but they can fire ROCKETS and MORTARS at the 1000 year old minaret...

Meanwhile the people are probably really looking forward to voting - under the protective gaze of our snipers, who know they can go home when the people are back in charge and the thugs who'd shoot at their own precious historical monuments are en route.

"aim straight...aim true...."

Yes sir! And with the .50 calibur it's a fast, flat track. ;)

"Capt. William Rockefeller, in charge of the nine-man sniper team, said he has not received any complaints about using the minaret as a snipers' nest."

Except for the incoming..

Own the high ground! They can run, but they'll just die tired.

About time we started garrisoning troublesome mosques. The other choice would be to level them.

50 calibre-rifle? I'd hate to be in the vicinity of the Jihadi who gets drilled with that-like getting splashed with a big Mac when a car runs over it.

Samarra was once a famous city in the Abassid Caliphate but today it is a rundown, garbage-strewn town at the heart of the Sunni triangle, where the insurgency is relentless.

Redundancy alert.
