Not to forget that RR was a dem until 1961 or so. He had many long-standing friendships from decades before that.
I also think people were more likely to ignore political persuasion back then. We seem much more divided today.

I had no idea Johnny was so dumb when it came to political matters (unless he was misquoted).
Carson ripped into George Bush a couple of years ago in an interview with Playboy or some other mag.
Johnny Carson was an atheist. He was a devout believer in the king of skeptics: James Randi. Mr. Carson believed in NOTHING. He even willed half a million dollars to The James Randi Foundation. Johnny was a pretty quirky guy. It is said he suffered from mental issues. His “medication” of choice was years, and years and years of heavy cocaine use, not to mention other heavy duty drugs he “played” around with. Johnny was one strange dude!

I hate Jay Leno, but I don’t think he’s a mess like Johnny was.
