Arms control activists urged U.N. treaty writers on Monday to approve a system for tracking small arms sales around the world, saying it was easier to track lost airline luggage than a machine gun.
Amnesty International, Oxfam International and the International Action Network on Small Arms called for a legally binding global marking and tracing treaty covering small arms and ammunition at the start of a two-week U.N. conference weighing how to deal with the problem.
"A piece of lost luggage can be traced from San Francisco to Sierra Leone within hours, yet deadly weapons disappear without trace on a daily basis," said Jeremy Hobbs, the director of Oxfam International.
A report by the three groups found that while weapons and ammunition often carry serial numbers, there is no worldwide system to record the information and make it available worldwide.
Nor are arms brokers -- middlemen who arrange arms sales across borders, putting them beyond the reach of most national governments -- required to register and report on their dealings in most countries.
That renders serial numbers "useless as a tool to identify, locate and trace illegal arms shipments," the groups said.

I have already e-mailed my Senator about this, I should get his cookie cutter standard form letter in th email in about 1 week. No other reply and this is just not enough. He know about it and all of the other half truths and propaganda that is usually in those. This is not a standard issue item here. This World Government is trying to invade our country corrupt our laws and overthrow our Constitutional Republic and our Congress is just going along with it.
Congress is to make laws that govern the people of the US, to protect and defend our Constitution and the Constitutional rights of the Citizens of the United States. Our Congress is agreeing to things the they are not allowed to. I never elected anyone to barter with mu Constitutional rights and freedoms,,,, DID YOU??
Thank You! Love it!
This will pass, too. The U.S. will sign it under the pretext that we must control international arms sales or some other b.s. Just watch.
I'm sick of the U.N. and our willingness to sign our country over to such a bloated, useless bureaucracy.
When the hell are we going to throw the UN out? What is it going to take?
Maybe someone needs to pilot one of those new mega jets loaded with French dignitaries into the UN building.
